Reuben Riffel is one of South Africa’s foremost exponents of culinary culture, rising to prominence with his eponymously named restaurant in Franschhoek in the heart of the Cape Winelands. It therefore comes as no surprise that he firmly believes in the principle of pairing food with wine – a recurring theme in his Signature Living with Reuben television show which regularly hosts wine estates from across South Africa. Carolyn Martin, marketing director at Creation Wines, recently appeared on Signature Living where she paired the Creation Viognier and Syrah, Grenache blend with Chef Reuben’s Braised Chicken and Peaches served with Lemon Rice.
Creation supports local Artisans
Creation has a proud reputation for supporting local producers, sourcing the majority of the ingredients used in our kitchen from within 80 km of the farm. Now, with our motto of ‘what grows together goes together’ firmly in mind, our commitment to the regional economy has extended to the use of exquisite hand-made pottery to present our cheese platters. Corinne de Haas has been heading up The Potter’s Gallery in Kleinmond since 1991 and serves as the creative force in the workshop and vision in the gallery.

First ‘We Build’ Zwelihle House completed
Exciting news from the ‘We Build’ Zwelihle project is that the first self-supporting four-wall structure built from 2-litre plastic bottles was completed on Friday, 5 June after a slight delay due to inclement weather. This first structure will be donated to the community as an art gallery while the surrounding area will be utilised as a small market area. Five more structures are planned for construction this month, and this is just the start. Says Anthea van der Pluym, initiator of the project: “Once those five are complete, I would like to go for a thousand units. This is not only making a difference to people’s lives, but the project is also creating a lot of positive community spirit – it’s great fun to volunteer on site.”
Those wanting to donate bottles can deliver them to Whale Coast 96FM or at the municipal transfer station. For further enquiries Anthea can be contacted on 082 696 4608 or via e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Creation has pledged R1 000 to the ‘We Build’ project which will contribute 200 brick bottles – it takes 3 000 brick bottles to build a house. Please make your pledge here and hopefully we can build a few houses together!

Wine Word of the Week: Tannin
Tannin is one of the most commonly used terms when referring to wines – especially red wines – and is found in the skin, pips and stems of grapes. White grape cultivars generally have less noticeable tannins as most white grapes are pressed soon after picking. Extended skin contact and barrel maturation however, can contribute some tannin to white wine. The main organoleptic property imparted by tannin if the grapes are unripe is dryness and bitterness; if the grapes are ripe, the tannins are smoother and sweeter. Tannins are an indication of age-worthiness as the structure of the tannins develops over time, mellowing while more complex flavours emerge.
