Long, very long ago (in fact 450 000 000 years!), Mother Nature laid the first foundations for what was to become one of the most exciting wine estates in the South African Winelands …
Welcome to Creation Wines, situated high up on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge of the cool-climate Walker Bay Wine Region near the seaside town of Hermanus. Here the estate’s virus-free vineyards thrive in 450-million-year-old clay loam soils. Climbing the steep hills of Babylonstoren Mountain they soar to an altitude of 300 m above sea level where they bask in generous sunlight and dance to the rhythm of the refreshing breezes blowing in from the nearby Atlantic.
In fact, Creation’s vineyards are within 9 km of Walker Bay and according to co-owner Jean-Claude Martin (who is also the estate’s viticulturist and winemaker) these cool maritime conditions are fundamental to the elegance of their premium wines, notably the Creation Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. An ever-growing list of prestigious achievements – both local and international – testifies to the distinctive quality of these terroir-driven wines which are now sought-after in countries worldwide.
Success however, didn’t come easy, as is told by Carolyn Martin (Creation co-owner and marketing director): “
When we settled on the farm in 2002, the land had never been planted to vines before and there was no infrastructure. To establish a winery from scratch in a remote corner without cell phone reception or facilities like fresh running water was hard work, to say the least.
But both Jean-Claude and Carolyn come from wine pioneering stock spanning at least three generations – so they persevered!
As Creation’s wines find their way to ever-expanding markets around the globe, so wine lovers from around the globe flock to Creation. Because this unique little enclave at the top end of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is more than an award-winning wine estate; it is also an acclaimed tourist destination.
It is often said that the journey teaches you about the destination – in the case of a visit to Creation it is literally true. Along the rustic Hemel-en-Aarde Road that snakes its way between the Kleinrivier and Babylonstoren Mountains, beauty is the overriding impression. At times the landscape is shrouded in indigenous vegetation; at others vistas of undulating vineyard greet you. On a road less travelled you pass old established farmsteads contrasting with striking contemporary structures and in the distance, if you’re looking in the right direction, a tiny rural church – all in remarkable harmony with this enchanting ‘byway to heaven’!
Creation owes its evocative name not only to the pristine beauty surrounding it or to the fact that it had never been planted to vineyards before. The name is also a promise of constant renewal and this spirit of innovation has largely contributed to its fame. Apart from its trendsetting wine portfolio (including many ‘firsts’ in the Hemel-en-Aarde) the Creation team under the passionate leadership of marketing director Carolyn Martin, has twice won the Great Wine Capitals of the World Award for the Most Innovative Wine Estate in South Africa and thrice the coveted KLINK Tourism Award for Best Food and Wine Pairing on a Wine Farm.
Pause-walk your way from the parking area through the magnificence of the indigenous fynbos garden and reflect on the generous floral gifts displayed along Creation’s pathway. The Tasting Room too personifies charm, extending a hearty welcome to young and old. Light and airy in summer, cosily warmed by a roaring fire in winter, it overlooks a breathtaking landscape of mountain and valley, lake and vineyard and is adorned with a superb collection of local art. Only cultivar-specific Riedel glassware is used for the wines which are served by a team whose knowledge is only surpassed by their enthusiasm. Rewarding the eye as well as the palate, the Creation Tasting Room is a veritable culinary treasure chest with no less than eight unique pairing options – ranging from the extensive 8-course Wine and Tapas Pairing to the popular Kiddies Pairing – on offer.
Creation. It is the soul of the land and its people that inspired the name. Because as proud custodians of this precious piece of paradise with its fynbos-clad hills and valleys teeming with indigenous fauna, every member of the Creation team is committed to conserving its natural heritage.
