In this popular series we feature selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world. This week we welcome Mo Therese from the vibrant and trendy Café 1999 in Durban.
The hard work of the Creation Wines team, the amazing location and site specific terroir for the vines plus the skilful and almost effortless winemaking of JC Martin combine to create award-winning wines which speak for themselves. Their range of premium and ultra-premium products can stand their own against the best of New World examples and even the premium level of Old World examples.
Creation’s Viognier is not only excellent but regularly consistent – it has brilliant acidity and moderate spicy notes without being jammy, sweet or too viscous. In fact, cool climate Viognier of this quality is hard to find in South Africa. Upfront I nose floral patterns of jasmine flower, honeysuckle and slight hyacinth. The overripe peach/white stone fruit of warmer climate Viognier is not present, which is a refreshing change for me! The palate begins with a tinge of acid that rolls along the tongue, setting up the ability for the wine to deliver its gracious fruit weight on the mid-palate, lingering on the finish for some minutes.
It is always great to collaborate with established brands such as Nespresso. Click here to watch a video clip where Phillip, our Tasting Room manager, talks about their versatile range and how well it can pair with our wines as well.

I have been to Creation many times before, and every time it surprises me and I enjoy myself even more. – Athena Spanellis (Online review).
Creation Wines is situated high up the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde valley. The whole valley is just exquisite and is simply postcard perfect. Walking through the door you immediately get that distinct upmarket feel. You are welcomed by a tasting room full of beautiful paintings and sculptures. The glass doors with amazing views just add to the ambience. Having tasted the canapé and wine pairing twice on different days, both occasions impressed. The service is welcoming and staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine and the history. Each dish is perfectly matched to showcase the wine that accompanies the food, creating a fine balance of elegance and finesse. Plating is modern and only the best Riedel stemware is used throughout each course. Without a doubt they live up to their slogan “Creating wines of distinction”. Definitely to be added to your list when in Hermanus. – Sharese Hunt (Zomato review)
