In this popular series we feature selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world. Each chooses his or her favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome Eric Botha of the well-known and atmospheric Big Easy Winebar & Grill in Durban.

Eric says:

My choice of wine is the Creation Syrah, Grenache blend. I personally prefer the choice of word – ‘Syrah’ instead of ‘Shiraz’ – and the wine shows typical Old World characteristics, for instance more white pepper than black pepper. The wine also reflects typical cool climate characteristics, especially the Grenache which shows no chewy notes. This wine has a long peacock tail finish that lingers with the follow up from the nose.

Creation: For the Sake Of Art

The fourth Hermanus FynArts Festival taking place from 10 to 19 June this year once again sees the participation of Creation Wines. The Estate not only hosts an exciting exhibition of sculptures by the award-winning Gavin Risibut also offers a Wine and Food Pairing Demonstration as well as a Wine and Food Pairing Dinner in collaboration with The Eatery, a well-known restaurant in Hermanus.

“As dedicated supporters of the arts, we are proud to participate in this joyous festival again,” says Creation marketing director, Carolyn Martin. She points out that fine winemaking is an art in itself and to celebrate this art Creation’s viticulturist and winemaker, Jean-Claude Martin, has created the exquisite single-vineyard  Art of Creation Chardonnay and Art of Creation Pinot Noir.

Here are a few comments recently made by our visitors:

I first experienced Creation Wines in the UK which coincided with the run up to our holiday in South Africa in December 2015. My husband and I were so impressed by the wine and Carolyn who ran the wine tasting in the UK that we decided to pay a visit to the winery in Hermanus. It was most certainly one of our most memorable and enjoyable afternoons in South Africa. The vineyard is set in a simply beautiful valley close to the seaside town of Hermanus. The views from the restaurant are something you would never tire of seeing. Add to that the Creation experience and you’re onto the jackpot. We opted for the Sunset Menu. We were treated to a wonderful dining experience paired with the Creation wines which were served by our very knowledgeable sommelier. We still talk about the experience even now (mostly in terms of going back and doing it all over again!) The selection of wine is such that I know you will find one to your taste and i highly recommend the Art of Pinot. Although i could very much buy the Viognier every month!! Thanks to the whole Creation team, and in particular the very hard working Carolyn, who really made this a special experience in gorgeous surroundings.

Philip our sommelier/food and wine tutor went the extra mile talking us through our secret food and wine tasting. We can highly recommend this! The food is beautifully presented and the wine is superb, thank you Philip and Creation, we will see you soon! Regards Janita and Theo Doms.

There is no limits for imagination and creativity. Creation Wines is an excellent example of this saying. They went over any standard expectations of wine tasting and wine pairing. From Tapas pairing to secret pairing, from charcuterie – to cheese pairing, from paradoxical wine and chocolate pairing to non-alcoholic pairing. Every dish, which is so beautiful, clever and complex, perfectly matching with suggested wine. Their service is friendly and professional. Their view … oh, no! I can’t write anymore … I need to come back again and bring my family and friends, and, of course, my overseas clients. I’m glad I found such a jewel in this beautiful area. Thank you!
