In this popular series we feature selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world. Each chooses their favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome the expert Manuel Cabello from Cape Town’s elegant Ellerman House in Bantry Bay.

Manuel says:

Selecting only one wine from Creation’s impressive portfolio is no easy task; virtually everything JC (Martin) touches turns to gold! However, I happened to be at the West Coast on a weekend away and sitting overlooking the ocean, the ultimate inspiration came to me: The Art of Creation Chardonnay paired with a butter-poached West Coast crayfish.

Creation at First Lunner Event

On Thursday 24 February Creation was the selected wine partner at the first media lunner event hosted by Chef Francois Ferreira and Ginja Food & Lifestyle Magazine at the Miele Kitchen in Bryanston. The Creation Whale Pod Rosé was served as a stylish aperitif after which guests were treated to a superb three course meal created by Chef Francois and paired with the Creation Chardonnay, the Creation Sauvignon Blanc and the Creation Syrah, Grenache respectively.

One of the rave reviews came from ‘Food By Jill’ who commented on Twitter: “What a treat of an evening with @GingaFood @Glanskok and @creationwines – amazing flavor infusions and tastes”. We’re looking forward to the next media lunner with Chef Francois, Miele and Ginja. Follow the events at #dinewithfrancois.

For those not yet familiar with the term ‘lunner’ … Well it refers to a meal served somewhere between lunch and dinner. What makes it so appealing to modern-day foodies is the fact that you don’t have to get home at midnight after enjoying a full course dinner. Lunner can start at 16h00 in the afternoon and end at 19h30 – allowing you enough time to do a day’s work, get home in time to look after home and family, plus doing a spot of blogging and still get to bed at a decent time! And that’s just one of the advantageous scenarios.

Creation in Switzerland

On Saturday 5 March Creation’s wines will be featured among the best of the Cape in Wädenswil, Switzerland. Harvest 2016 – Update

Although we had slightly warmer and drier conditions than normal on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge from the end of November through to the middle of January, these conditions changed at the end of January as El Niño receded. South-westerly winds blowing in from the cold Atlantic cooled the land in the early afternoons, leading to a cool night index factor of 12 degrees less than at midday. This has contributed to keeping the average mean temperature during February at around 19 to 21 degrees Celsius over a 24-hour period.

Planting, including row direction and aspects, judicious leaf canopy management, ground cover and atmospheric conditions all have effects on the transpiration from the leaves and evaporation in the vineyards, called ‘evapotranspiration’. Creation’s clay derived Bokkeveld shale loam soils aid water retention and tend to be cooler, allowing slow, even ripening as water stress is less prevalent.

At present 70% of the harvest is in and this includes all of the white cultivars and the Pinot Noir. As conditions cooled the intake slowed from two weeks ahead of schedule to only a week compared to last year. In fact, it seems that our red cultivars will now be picked on a similar schedule as last year. Although it is too early to determine the flavour profiles of our white wines (most of which are in fermentation phase), we are happy with the quality of the grapes that we have harvested so far.
