Burgundy Adventure, June 2017
Always keen to expand their knowledge and keep track of the latest developments in the world of wine, the Creation team regularly spread their wings to visit inspirational places around the globe. No sooner have owners Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin returned from their travels through the UK and Europe or Eben Bezuidenhoud and Phillip Marais set off for Burgundy. Eben reports:
Our trip kicked off by visiting some of the lesser known appellations in the south – Pouilly-Loché, Moulin-a-Vent and the greater Mâconnais to name but a few. The bulk of our time was devoted to understanding the complexity of this area’s great terroirs. The hospitality and generosity of so many of the region’s renowned winemakers allowed us to taste multiple examples of some of the rarest and most expensive wines in the world. Anyone that has heard of Burgundy will undoubtedly know the grand names of Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Echézeaux and Vosne-Romanée.
Another member of the Creation team who recently visited Europe is chef Francois Hugo. Here is his interesting account:
It all began with an 11-hour flight from Cape Town International Airport to Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam – a first for me! But although rather nerve-racking, I learnt so much. Not only by experiencing different ways of doing things in the workplace, but also by spending free time with the Dutch people – who certainly love good, hearty and super tasty cuisine.
My first two days were spent with Robert Benier of Benier Global Wines and his family who showed me around Den Bosch. I then started work at Restaurant Perceel, situated in Capelle aan den Ijssel with Chef Jos Grootscholten and his wife Sharon Tettero. They are a powerful couple passionately dedicated to what they do. Fresh produce, self-grown herbs and flowers are to be seen and tasted in all their dishes. What struck me about the young, talented kitchen team is their commitment – small details can make or break a dish. I also had the privilege of meeting one of the top cheese sommeliers, Maarten Koek.
I worked hectic shifts of between 16 to 18 hours a day and soon realised that every position in the kitchen is equally important. From the head chef to the scullery worker each person has an important role. I’ve returned with a fire inside me to come and show what I had learnt. Now that I’m back I hope to help enhance our culinary skills in the Creation kitchen and to bring more amazing dishes to the table, wine and food pairings that are bound to blow the socks off our Tasting Room guests!
I fell in love with Creation Wines even before I tried the wine or spoke to the passionate people behind the vineyard.

Willie Botha’s Art at Creation
Creation Wines has been dedicated to supporting the arts ever since its inception in 2002. Now the team takes pleasure in participating in the 2017 Hermanus FynArts Festival (9 to 18 June) with a truly exciting installation of sculptures by the gifted South African artist, Willie Botha. Among the sculptures is the dramatic limited edition bronze titled African Dawn. It shows a leopard, lying on a tree branch with the African sun in the background. Over the years Willie has spent a lot of time in the African Bushveld and in this sculpture he beautifully captured the tranquillity of the resting leopard awaiting dusk.
Creation Chardonnay and Pear: a Cosy Affair
A warm and hearty thank you to Creation chef Eleanor for her scrumptious winter recipe: Baked Pear Lady with Cinnamon and Sultanas, Pistachio and Honey Crumble served with Vanilla and Nutmeg Custard and Crème Fraîche. Inspired by the Creation Chardonnay with its generous layers of sun-kissed pear and peach, fresh minerality and subtle spice, this glorious dessert is an excellent match for the wine. Click here for the recipe.
Situated some 18 km from the coastal resort of Hermanus, Creation is more than a wine farm; it is a glorious destination where a warm welcome awaits young and old. Click here to make a reservation. Here are some comments recently made by our visitors:
We had the wine paring with tapas for lunch. The place was full and the journey in fantastic tastes took about 3 hours. I think this is a great place for a special occasion and one of the best restaurants in Hermanus.
One of my favourites! The best wine and food pairing! Its name says it all – “CREATION” in the heaven and earth valley … What more can I say … You can’t miss this one!
