Creating Wines of Distinction

Ménage à Trois à la Creation NL

Take a rich and robust Cabernet Sauvignon, introduce it to a fresh and fruity Merlot and spice it up with a feisty, peppery Petit Verdot. The result? Ooh la la, serious seduction in a glass!

Released in 2008, the 2006 Creation Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot was the first Bordeaux-style red blend to come from the Hemel-en-Aarde. Since then this splendid wine has never failed to impress wine critics and wine lovers alike. Among the latest accolades has been a whopping 90 points for the 2014 vintage at the 2016 RisCura Red Hot Wine Awards convened by Winemag.co.za. Tim Atkin, British Master of Wine and international wine judge, scored the 2014 vintage an impressive 91 points while the 2015 was allocated no less than 94 points by Jamie Goode, a renowned British author and a wine columnist with a PhD in plant biology.

And now Creation has just released its 2016 Bordeaux-style blend to coincide with International Cabernet Sauvignon Day on 31 August. The latest vintage features Cabernet Sauvignon in the lead role and lovers of this award-winning three-cultivar red can once again look forward to enjoying cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin’s finest blending skills.

They look forward to hosting private client and sommelier tastings in Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Norway and then in the UK.  Among their activities will also be trade tastings in Bruges, Belgium with Intervinos and in Copenhagen with Løgismose. They’re also planning a wine club tasting in Norrköping, Sweden and a private dinner in Tønsberg, Norway. Then off to the UK for WOSA’s Intrepid South Africa Tasting, the Three Wine Men Tasting and private tastings at 67 Pall Mall and Harrogate Fine Wines. More information on their whereabouts to follow.

The Bigger the Better!

There are many indications that wine bottles actually started out big, and shrank over time to the standard 750 ml size that we know today. This makes sense considering that clay amphorae, the precursor to glass bottles, varied in size between 9 and 26 litre!
The advantages of larger format bottles today are in many cases the same reason that wine was stored in larger vessels in ancient times. The larger the bottle, the smaller the surface-area-to-volume ratio because less of the wine is exposed to the small amount of air within the bottle. This significantly increases the longevity of the wine.

There are many more reasons why larger bottles of wine are becoming increasingly popular. Apart from being sought-after collectors’ items they make brilliant gifts for family, friends and business associates. But the simplest reason is probably still the best: they make you feel good, and that’s what wine is all about!

Due to the increased demand for larger format bottles Creation has released 1.5-litre, 3-litre and 5-litre bottles of our popular Rhône-style (Syrah, Grenache) blend as well as 1.5-litre and 3-litre bottles of the sought-after Creation Reserve Pinot Noir. Simply click here

Earthy Food from Heaven; Heavenly Wine from Earth

In a recent blog about Creation’s Seven Chapter Wine Pairing, Nosy Rosy (Passionate about South Africa) enthuses: “The Story of Creation is a unique sensory experience. You might not even notice all the detail of co-creating, complementary elements such as textures, colours, flavours, sounds and salivations that dance together to give you that deeply satisfying feeling of sweet surrender into a sea of pleased senses.” Click here to read the complete blog.

Leafroll Virus can be Combatted

Vine viruses (especially leafroll) are regarded as one of the wine producer’s biggest enemies as they have the potential not only to reduce the lifespan of a vineyard drastically but also to seriously hamper the quality of the grapes.

The issue of virus-free vineyards has been close to Creation owners JC and Carolyn Martin’s hearts ever since they established their estate in 2002. The land had never been planted to vines before and JC, who is a Swiss-trained viticulturist and winemaker, had the foresight to plant only virus-free clones. This was done in consultation with Vititec and his vines were the first virus-free mother blocks to be planted post-apartheid in South Africa.

Commenting on the subject Sheryl Faure of wine.co.za wrote: “I recently attended a workshop with VinPro, in collaboration with Vititec, Winetech and Creation Wines in the Hemel and Aarde valley where we were shown the extent of how the virus has spread in the area. Intrigued by this and being in the heart of the beautiful Hemel and Aarde valley where one finds such contrasting blocks of vineyard between neighbours, somewhat resembling a quilt, we were told by Jean-Claude Martin, owner of Creation Wines, that one can combat this virus.” Click here to read the complete report.
