Creating Wines of Distinction

Creation. Alive with the Joys of Harvest

At Creation on the lofty Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, the 2018 harvest has started on schedule – no early surprises – and the entire estate radiates excitement. However, when approached for inside information, Cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin simply smiles … from ear to ear …

The rain over the past few weeks was perfect, just enough to keep the vineyards happy and not under too much stress. At the time of writing the estate’s Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier grapes are reaching the cellar in prime condition, no big variances in volume when compared to last year’s yields.

All of the Pinot Noir is now in and although the yield has dropped by some 20% from 2017, the Creation team believes that the increased quality of the grapes will compensate for the loss of quantity.

A truly exciting happening this harvest will be the picking of Creation’s maiden Roussanne vintage. This is part of the ongoing evolution at Creation and it’s always fascinating to see what nature delivers, so watch this space …

Among Creation’s harvest interns for 2018 is Janina Kraft, a qualified sommelier from Alfons Weiss Hotel in Stuttgart. Janina believes that wine is not just for drinking, it’s a magical juice. She waxes lyrical about the Creation Viognier: “I’ve never tasted such a good Viognier,” she remarks. Commenting on her first two weeks at Creation she says it has been quite busy with some 25 tons of grapes reaching the cellar every day.  “As a sommelier I find it very interesting to work in the cellar because it gives me the opportunity to learn the dynamics of winemaking first hand. Thank you so much JC and Carolyn for this great learning experience.”
