A clone is a vine propagated from one single mother vine with the result that each plant that is propagated from it is identical in DNA and uniform in personality.

In South Africa quality grafting material is extremely important: to minimise the risk of spreading virus but also to ensure that the clones selected are best suited to the site on which they will be planted. The estate vineyards on Creation represent a virus-free mother block from which cuttings are taken to establish new vineyards throughout the country, thus helping to improve the quality of South African vineyards.

Cape Wine 2015 Underway

cape wineAt the time of writing Cape Wine, which is the flagship business showcase of the South African wine industry, is underway. And Creation is delighted to participate.

Presented at the Cape Town International Convention Centre every three years by Wines of South Africa (WOSA), Cape Wine is the most successful international wine trade show in the Southern Hemisphere. With delegates from across the globe, it is an important date on the calendar for wineries, traders and journalists alike.

Highlights include a series of seminars by experts and insiders: winemakers, viticulturists, trendsetters and other high profile speakers who share their views and ideas on various aspects of the local wine industry. A special wine tasting area allows visitors to explore a wide range of themes, styles and regions – highlighting top quality wines across 17 specified areas.

A total of 240 wines are being poured in this tasting area housed within the exhibition hall, offering the ideal way to taste and compare in one visit, without interruption. Experts from the South African Sommelier Association (SASA) are on hand to assist you and answer your questions.

Creation in South African Wine Tasting Championships (SAWTC) National Finals

The 15 best national tasters issued from the provincial selections held in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town met at the luxurious TAJ Hotel in Cape Town on 13 September to face the challenge of identifying wines from around the world, and to decide who deserves to be the 2015 South African Wine Tasting Champions.

Competitors had two hours to taste blind and identify 12 wines from 8 different countries. To mark points they had to guess the country, the cultivar, the vintage, the appellation and the producer of the wines served to them in anonymous decanters.

The diverse lineup of wines forced the contestants to use their talents and the Creation Sauvignon Blanc 2015 was first up for tasting – chosen for its ability to effortlessly reflect the cooler climate style of Sauvignon Blanc produced in the Hemel-en-Aarde. We wish the SAWTC team the best of luck as they head for France to compete in the international leg.

Wine Word of the Week: Clone

A clone is a vine that has developed differently from other vines of the same cultivar, often possessing unique and desirable characteristics relating to disease resistance, fruit quality and growth. A clone may develop through natural selection by adapting to its natural environment or it may be developed in a controlled environment to advance favourable characteristics.
