About six weeks ago we discussed the first growth phase of the 2016 vintage, bud burst. This week we’re looking at the next critical steps in the growth cycle of the vine: flowering and pollination. Once bud burst has occurred and the shoots have grown to approximately 40 cm, the flower clusters are clearly visible and have entered the pre-bloom stages. This means the caps are still attached, and the flowers have not yet bloomed.
The next phase is first bloom, when the caps of the flowers begin to drop off the first pistils and anthers become visible. Most vines are self-pollinating, in other words the flower contains both the male and female reproductive parts. The stamen supports the anthers, which produce pollen. If a pollen grain lands on the receptive tissue of the stigma it may germinate and produce a pollen tube. These structures surround the pistil, which transports the pollen down to the ovary which is situated at the base of the flower. Click here to read further.
