At the moment the talk of the town is Chardonnay. And that includes the launch of Creation’s first (2016) Reserve Chardonnay, the upcoming Hemel-en-Aarde Classic Chardonnay Celebration and also the recent De Wetshof Chardonnay Celebration.

The latter was attended by Carolyn and JC Martin and a lot of insight was shared. One speaker especially, the US wine writer and novelist Jay McInerney, caught the attention. Among Jay’s words of wisdom were the following:

Depending on when it’s picked, where it’s grown and who is making it, Chardonnay comes in a huge variety of styles ranging from lean and stony to opulent and tropical; metaphorically speaking it runs the gamut from Marilyn Monroe to Twiggy, from anorexic to sumo wrestler, from raw oysters to poached lobster, from Zen to Baroque, from Botero to Modigliani.

This reminds one of the variety of Chardonnays produced under the Creation label. With the release of the Creation Reserve Chardonnay the estate now offers three – all elegantly reflecting our cooler climate, yet with exciting differences in personality.

The beautifully fresh Creation Chardonnay is slightly more fruit-driven than the others with generous quince, pear and peach aromas and flavours, enhanced by fresh minerality and hints of vanilla. Well-judged acidity contributes excellent balance and a lively, lingering aftertaste.

Grown in a single vineyard, the new Creation Reserve Chardonnay has a presence all of its own – and what a presence! Vibrant aromas of fresh grapefruit and fragrant apple mingle with a hint of honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon. These are echoed on the oh so clean and pure palate where buttery nuances are beautifully balanced by the characteristic Creation minerality as a hallmark of freshness and finesse.

The exclusive Art of Creation Chardonnay is even more complex, gaining its intensity from a specific site within a single vineyard. Elegantly refined in its aromas of fresh lime and delicate quince, the wine is also gorgeously opulent with whiffs of warm butterscotch and almond. On the creamy, exquisitely balanced palate layer upon layer of flavour unfold: rich vanilla pod, peach kernel, vivacious pear, a hint of white pepper … all enlivened by bracing minerality.

Fitting in with the theme is the maiden Hemel-en-Aarde Classic Chardonnay Celebration taking place at The Thatch House in Hermanus on Saturday 19 November and focusing on the exceptional quality and distinctiveness of the Hemel-en-Aarde’s cool-climate Chardonnays.
