In this popular series we feature selected restaurants from around the world. Each chooses a favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome Duncan Bruce and Constantijn Hahndiek from Hartford House in Mooi River, Natal Midlands.

General Manager Duncan says:

The Creation Art of Pinot Noir is a beautiful and elegant wine with subtle spiciness. It reminds you of eating a bowl of berries, nice and ripe, but extremely elegant and soft. The wine has those characteristic earthy Pinot Noir undertones. It’s gorgeous, like a lady in a glass. The flavours of the wine linger beautifully and then soften away – a very classic and elegant style of Pinot Noir. We are very privileged to have a wine of that calibre.

Celebrating Spring with Creation Chardonnay

It is the first week of spring and the early budding varieties like Chardonnay are entering the bud burst phase of their growth cycle. The buds, situated between the stem and the petiole (leaf stem) first appeared during the summer growth period of the previous growing season. As the soil temperature rises osmotic forces push nutrient-rich water up into the dormant vine. Tiny shoots use the reserves of carbohydrate stored up before winter and will produce the first leaves of the new season, helping to accelerate growth and start the photosynthetic processes.

Hartford House Dinner

Creation Wines’ August visits to Durban ended on a high note with owners Carolyn and JC Martin together with our Durban representative, Nkulu Mkhwanazi, attending a four-course dinner at Hartford House in Mooi River, Natal Midlands. The highly talented Chef Constantijn Hahndiek, who also features in our blog this week, created the delectable cuisine which was perfectly paired with Creation’s award-winning wines. Among the memorable treats was the tuna dish paired with Creation’s Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon. Below are some highlights of the evening.

High Praise for Creation Art of Chardonnay

The Creation team is proud to have received the following review from sommelier Joakim Blackadder on the 2015 Creation Art of Chardonnay: “I tasted it over a couple of days and it is incredibly stable and will mature for a decade to the better. In quality and stylistically it reminds me of a very good wooded premier cru level Chablis with full ripeness, I think Defaix Les Lys. All in all – a delicious wine.” The Swedish-born Joakim gained extensive experience in Michelin-starred restaurants before re-locating to South Africa at the end of 2008. Among his many achievements have been receiving the annual Service Excellence Award from Eat Out magazine three years in a row.

Welcome to our Little Piece of Paradise

Situated some 18 kilometres from the coastal resort of Hermanus, Creation is more than a wine farm; it is a glorious destination where a warm welcome awaits young and old. Click here to make a reservation. Here are some comments recently made by our visitors:

Was a little bit concerned as this was a gift and it was on a wine farm as I do not drink alcohol. Not only was the atmosphere welcoming; it was quite a unique experience. The Chef catered for our special dietary needs by replacing and substituting dishes without compromising on the taste or presentation. Our waitron Ziso was an absolute treat; taking us on a trip around the world with our teas and interacting with as much enthusiasm as those talking about the estate’s award winning wines. We sat by the fireplace; I love fireplaces and had a wonderful view of the valley.

I have referred many guests to Creation and have ONLY had positive reviews from all my guests. When reviewing the venue myself … pleasantly surprised, and will keep referring guests to Creation. Definitely book in advance.

We popped in at about 2 pm. Place was packed. The hosts found a table for us to do some tasting and spent time introducing each wine we tasted. Great view. Be careful around lunchtime and enjoy the wine and hosts
