The verdict is out: Creation Wines has once again won the Great Wine Capitals (GWC) Best of Wine Tourism Award (for 2017) in the category ‘Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences’. It’s the third time in five years that this honour has befallen the wine estate and according to co-owner and marketing director Carolyn Martin the Creation team is delighted.
The GWC is a network of ten major global cities in both the northern and southern hemispheres which share a key economic and cultural asset: their internationally renowned wine regions. The annual Best of Wine Tourism Awards is an international competition designed to reward the wineries in member cities and wine regions that have distinguished themselves in terms of delivering quality experiences to the public.
Established in 2002, Creation Wines on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus has always lived up to its evocative name. This trendsetting spirit has not only led to the launch of exciting ‘firsts’ within their premium wine portfolio, but also to thrilling innovations among its wine tourism offerings. “At Creation we constantly re-invent ourselves,” says Carolyn and this is especially well reflected in the pioneering role the team has played in the field of Wine and Food Pairing. At the moment Creation’s menu offers no less than eight pairing options. The inventive Creation Culinary Team takes pleasure in creating new recipes or blending a little nostalgia with a hearty helping of innovation to reconstruct old favourites. This means that in the Creation Tasting Room you can always look forward to a new flavour adventure.
Another innovation has been Creation’s blog series on Wine and Herb Pairing which set out to prove just how the elegance and finesse of cool climate wines enhance the taste of fresh herbs when used in considered quantities. More recently they ran the ‘Wine and Flower Pairing: A Beautiful Affair’ series which proved to be as popular.
Yet another first from Creation is the ‘Sommelier’s Choice’ series featuring selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world. The participants are requested to select their favourite Creation wine, recommend a matching dish and provide the rationale behind the pairing.
To quote Carolyn: “The name ‘Creation’ is not only a tribute to the riches Mother Nature has bestowed upon our farm, it is also a reference to our soils which had never been planted to vines before, and last but not least, it is a promise of constant renewal.’’ And, whether it’s the estate’s uniquely individual wines, imaginative marketing, pioneering wine pairing or progressive policy for sustainability, there’s always something new. And that’s a promise!
The last word comes from Jean-Claude Martin, Creation co-owner, viticulturist and cellarmaster: “At Creation every dawn brings an exciting new challenge and innovation is a way of life. This trendsetting spirit has shaped our vision and led to many a thrilling achievement.”
