We’re pleased to resume our popular series in which we feature selected restaurants from around the world. Each chooses a favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome Chris Milner and Tomas Maunier from the Fazenda Rodizio Bar & Grill in Manchester.
Creation brings to Fazenda a sense of Africa’s generosity that warms our patrons’ hearts and souls! The wines pair beautifully with the Brazilian concept and especially with our delicious meats.
Creation Merlot and Riedel – The Perfect Combination
In this last week of Merlot Month we give you the rationale behind using varietal specific glasses as provided by Tarryn Vincent from Riedel:
One glass is not ideal for all styles of wine; a wine’s bouquet, taste, balance and finish are all affected by the shape of the glass from which it is consumed. Riedel has created a Cabernet/ Merlot glass shape that specifically highlights the wine’s unique characteristics. It is generous in size to let the bouquet develop fully. The glass emphasizes the fruit, allowing the wine to achieve a balance that would normally take years of ageing to acquire. The shape directs the flow of wine onto the zone of the tongue which perceives sweetness, thus accentuating the fruit and de-emphasizing the bitter qualities of the tannin.
Inspired by Spring
Recently Inemari Rabie, food stylist, chef and recipe developer and photographer Linda Fourie styled an amazing spring inspired table under the trees and between the vineyards at Creation. Beautiful dishes were created by Inemari and captured by Linda, with Creation’s award-winning wines featuring as the wine of choice.
Creation in the News
Tim Atkin (Master of Wine) recently wrote an article for the Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine about the Hemel-en-Aarde, saying: “The Hemel-en-Aarde is most strongly linked with the two main Burgundian varieties and that is reflected in the critical praise they both receive. Ataraxia, Creation, Hamilton Russell, Newton Johnson, Restless River and Sumaridge are all among the best chardonnay producers in the Cape, while any list of the country’s leading pinot noirs would feature Bouchard Finlayson, Creation (again), Crystallum, La Vierge, Newton Johnson (ditto), Tesselaarsdal and Storm.”
He quotes Carolyn Martin of Creation as one of the best marketers in the area and of viticulturist and cellarmaster JC he has the following to say: “The Swiss-born Jean-Claude Martin, who owns Creation with his South African wife, Carolyn … calls the Hemel-en-Aarde a “moderate climate that avoids the big heat waves …” The proximity to the sea means that temperatures never go above 30° C, but it’s dry and sunny most years from January to April. For all that, he adds, the Ridge is significantly cooler than the other two wards. “The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley picks two weeks before us and it’s very rare for them to get the frosts we do. And, as our plantings are younger, we don’t have problems with virus.” Touché, as they say in Geneva.”

Tried the 8 course tapas tasting menu today, paired with 8 wines. The restaurant is on a lovely setting amidst their vines. The food was beautifully presented and very creative, and the wines chosen to pair up with each course were excellent. Good attentive service with lots of detail provided on the food and wine as each course was served. My wife doesn’t eat meat (which featured on 3 of the courses), but they were more than happy to substitute a tasty cheese or veg as required. Excellent! They also offer other menus, including a traditional 2/3 course with wine, a cheese tasting with wine etc. Pretty busy, so worth making a reservation.
