In this popular series we feature selected sommeliers from restaurants around the world. Each chooses a favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome Neleen Strauss, co-owner and sommelier of High Timber in London, UK.
I chose the Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2015. Firstly, it’s delicious and I also think 2015 might be the vintage of the past 15 years. The wine is wonderfully structured and nuanced, and I’d love to drink it often to see how it develops.
A Proud Pinot Pedigree
When in 2002 the Swiss-born Jean-Claude (JC) Martin and his South African-born wife, Carolyn took up the challenge of establishing a winery in a remote corner of Walker Bay, South Africa, they did so with the courage of their conviction. The land had never been planted to vines before; however being a qualified viticulturist as well as a winemaker, JC recognised the potential, especially for the cultivation of top quality Pinot Noir.
Creation’s unique setting on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge combines close proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean (only 9 km away) with an elevation of 300 m above sea level. The average day temperature during the growth period is between 22° and 26° C with the cool night index being 12° C less than midday. The average mean temperature during the growth period in February this year was 20.01° C and on average there is a maximum of five days that the temperature is over 30° C. Thanks to these cool conditions the grapes ripen gradually, evenly and fully, resulting in elegant fruit flavours balanced by crisp acidity and subtle, silky tannins.

Nederburg Auction – Tim Akin Tasting
Tim Atkin MW was the key note speaker at the 42nd annual Nederburg Auction which took place on 16 and 17 September 2016. On the 16th all the wines receiving 95 and more in his 2016 report on South African wines were tasted. This included the 2015 Creation Art of Pinot which received a 95 point rating.
Around the world …
The past few weeks have seen three members of the Creation team globe-trotting from the UK to Canada to the USA and back again – thoroughly enjoying the interaction with consumers, clients and agents alike!
First stop was the UK where Carolyn and Dieter Odendaal hosted various tastings and attended exciting wine events such as the WOZANI Three Wine Men and Intrepid tasting. JC met up in Canada with Creation’s Canadian agent, Sean Rowlands. The following wines are also now available from the LCBO: Creation Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah Grenache. Their US tour included various tastings, both trade and private, all hugely successful. It started in New York at the Metropolitan Club. At the high end Le Cirque restaurant JC was joined by Sommelier Aleksandar Petreski for a tasting of Creation’s wines. JC met up with one of our clients Heather James who introduced us to Justin Hersker from The Mayflower Grace. The next destination was Boston together with James Clarke from Blue Crane Imports, importers of high-value, high-quality South African wine. Here they participated in an in-store consumer tasting at Wine Riot, well known for hosting educational wine events in Boston, New York and Chicago. (Coinciding with JC’s trip was the happy event of the birth of the boy of one of Blue Crane Imports’ staff members who has the initials none other than: JC!)
From Boston they travelled to San Francisco joining a team from Cape Ardor, the largest exclusive retailer of South Africa’s top quality wines, at a trade tasting at The Workshop in Emeryville. Then on to Chicago where JC did a staff training on Creation’s wines at The Promontory. Another highlight in Chicago was the private consumer dinner at Bin 36. Classic Chardonnay Celebration in Hermanus
Over the past number of years the Hemel-en-Aarde has become famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. And now the producers of this unique wine area have decided to share their beautiful Chardonnay with wine lovers at a dedicated Chardonnay festival. The Classic Chardonnay Celebration takes place at the Thatch House on Saturday, 19 November and will focus on the exceptional quality and distinctiveness of the Hemel-en-Aarde’s cool-climate Chardonnays.
