In this popular series we feature selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world. Each chooses his or her favourite Creation wine, tells us why and recommends a matching dish. This week we welcome Marlvin Gwese (head sommelier) and Brian Mahlangu (assistant sommelier) from the Cape Grace Hotel in Cape Town.

Brian says:

A few years ago I embarked on an excursion to the renowned Hemel-en-Aarde. After numerous wine tastings at numerous wine farms in the valley, I stopped at Creation and was met by Carolyn Martin. She took me through the wines and JC Martin, the winemaker, also expanded my knowledge – with alacrity. I felt very important that day! The beautiful ambience, the superb service and the team’s expertise are still fresh in my memory.

The Creation Viognier is a seductively well-textured wine with abundant fruit, accompanied by crisp, fresh acidity leading to a zesty aftertaste. The palate is rich and creamy with hints of white peach, cumquat and apricot. The wine is full of character just like the couple who made it!

Chef Geoffrey Phillipson Visits Creation

“Incredible Wine and Food at Creation Wine Estate thanks to Carolyn Martin and Jean-Claude and your amazing team for such wonderful hospitality and our server Stephanie van Rooyen who was awesome!”

What a wonderful write-up from Geoffrey Phillipson on Facebook after visiting the Creation Tasting Room this past week. Geoffrey is a South African-born chef living and working in the USA. On his recent visit to South Africa, he brought his chef students for a culinary experience and went to discover the top restaurants in South Africa, including The Test Kitchen and Chefs Warehouse in Cape Town. He especially appreciated the different pairings offered at Creation, including the Wine and Herb and Wine and Flower Pairings.

This was the most unexpected experience that we have had in the Cape. Very surprised as to the hidden secrets in the Hemel and Aarde Valley. Creation Wines and their Tapas menu with wine pairing was a superb experience and value for money. What an experience that is seriously world class!! Well done to Carolyn and her team. We will be back!

Wine Pairing at Creation Wines is magical. 8 top class plates and world-beating wines. Unusual props, mushrooms for earthiness, sage leaf for spice and Pinot Noir and Blends crash into your taste buds. Carolyn, the owner adds a touch of class to the occasion with the “inside track” of the winemaker. Attentive and knowledgeable, staff serve with smiles and humour. And the price is still a best kept secret even after Brexit! Don’t tell anyone; us Hermanus locals like to get a table at short notice….

We thought this just might be another poncy upmarket wine farm blah blah. It is gorgeous and the wines exceeded our expectations. Jo-ann who served us was exceptional and the moment where the owner personally fetched us yet unreleased Chardonnay from the cellar was sublime. Fantastic visit – only regret is that we did not book for lunch … On the list to return.
