Tuna is a summer-autumn fish, a little like a light steak and a dish so perfect for this time of the year as a pairing with Pinot Noir. Our harvest season fare at Creation includes tuna as there are a number of skilled tuna fishermen in the Hemel-en-Aarde and Hermanus.
Among them are our fine neighbours Chris Goatley and Chris Hepburn-Brown who find solace and beauty in the ocean and the adrenaline rush of catching a fighting fish which can grow in excess of 100 kg a wonderful pastime. Lucky for us they also deliver delightfully fresh tuna to Creation which inspired our culinary team to create their scrumptious Tuna Loin with Beetroot Carpaccio, Goat’s-milk Cheese, Raspberry and Mustard Reduction and Zaatar Spice to be paired with our Pinot. We will be resuming our popular Sommelier Series featuring selected sommeliers from top restaurants around the world in a few weeks’ time.
Harvest Update – Our Promising Reds
The effects of La Niña – the counterbalance to El Niño – have begun as summer wanes and autumn starts. This has meant cooler, normal weather conditions for Creation during the second part of the harvest of later ripening red cultivars such as Syrah, Merlot, Grenache and Petit Verdot.
Petit Verdot is one of the least known cultivars to have found a home at Creation on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. It is a formidable blending component, giving a great mid-palate mouthfeel and structure to our Bordeaux-style blend (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot). This year marks the 10th vintage of this blend: the 2006 vintage was the first to be produced at Creation with only 12 000 bottles released. A friend from Germany recently brought us a bottle from his cellar and it was amazing to taste how well the wine has matured. Thank you Ralph Fuchs! In celebration of its 10th anniversary we have now introduced a new tapas pairing for our Bordeaux-style blend: Kudu, King Oyster and Shiitake Mushrooms, Blueberries and Smoked Paprika. Delicious – but don’t just take our word for it; visit us to decide for yourself! Click here to book online.
In the meantime we’re looking forward to harvesting the Grenache this week. We were the first to plant this cultivar in the Hemel-en-Aarde and one of the joys arising from our virus-free, now mature vineyards is the ability to produce such high quality, terroir-expressive Grenache. It is a hardy cultivar: the thick, waxy, shiny green foliage is particularly resilient to strong winds and the vine itself fairly resistant to most diseases. Creation Grenache benefits from the unique combination of a cool night index of 12 degrees less than the daytime temperature and a long, sunny ripening season. This results in a fresh, fruity but not overripe style of Grenache. We recently released a limited edition single cultivar called ‘Sumac Grenache’ and lovers of this wine will be pleased to know that our next 100% Grenache (the 2015 vintage) will be released in December this year. It will once again be a limited edition, so click here to ensure your allocation.
Our Grenache also plays an important role as blending partner in our multiple award-winning Syrah, Grenache – a wine we describe as a ‘sly chameleon’ due to its ability to change personality depending on the dish or occasion. Click here to read more about the wine and here to order online.
Next week will see the harvesting of our Cabernet Sauvignon which, as with our other reds, shows great promise!
