At the time of writing the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is clad in cloaks of magical mist. Although the vines are slumbering in their deep winter hibernation, work in the vineyards never ceases. Pre-pruning (also known as ‘borselkop’ pruning) is now the order of the day and according to assistant winemaker Michael Malan this process makes the shoots more manageable during the final pruning, just before spring. Michael comments:
Pruning is a highly scientific practice and a vital factor in the cycle of grape and wine production. This is where you set the standard for fruit quality. One has to ask a few questions, such as: What is the vigour of the soils and the vines? How many tonnes per hectare do we want? What is the cultivar we are working with? What is the age of the vineyard and what is the style of wine we have in mind for this vineyard?

Introducing new Pebbles Project Manager, Madelein Snyman
On behalf of Creation Wines we would like to welcome Madelein Snyman as new project manager of the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project; we look forward to supporting her. Madelein’s career includes working as a non-medical volunteer for Operation Smile in countries such as Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Madagascar, Mozambique and South Africa. In 2015 she was appointed as development coordinator for Operation Smile. In this position she was in charge of the overall development and growth of partnerships with donors and also managed all corporate and event-based fundraising.
A collaboration between Haygrove Heaven staff and Hermanus Primary School recently resulted in a donation of primary school books to the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project. Here four learners from Hermanus Primary can be seen handing over the books.

New Release: African Penguin Reserve
With the launch of Creation’s exciting new ‘Penguin’ wine range earlier this year, the estate has once again demonstrated its commitment to conserving its natural environment. “We’re proud to celebrate our maritime environment by supporting the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary in its important efforts to rehabilitate, release and research South Africa’s endangered penguin,” said Creation marketing director, Carolyn Martin. A percentage of each bottle sold is donated to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary.
Good news for Rosé lovers is the fact that Creation has just released the 2017 African Penguin Reserve Rosé. Chic yet convivial, this blend of Grenache, Viognier and Syrah has the gentle allure of dried rosebud and straw, mingling with inviting whiffs of wild strawberry and lemon blossom. On the palate an intriguing interaction comes into play: mineral hints resembling Himalayan crystal salt contrasting with a lingering, honeyed aftertaste of beeswax. With in-between, zesty flavours of strawberry, raspberry and cherry. A Rosé with Resonance!

Willie Botha’s Art at Creation
Creation Wines has been dedicated to supporting the arts ever since its inception in 2002 and is at present curating a truly exciting installation of sculptures by the gifted South African artist, Willie Botha. His dynamic bronze On the Beach depicts his son Willie and their Staffordshire dog. “We often went for sunset walks on Grotto Beach and this was the image I had in my memory when creating the sculpture.”
The Joshua Tree
Creation Wines is proud to be associated with The Joshua Tree. This non-profit organisation specializes in making high quality furniture and products from recycled French oak wine barrels. Their principle motivation is to offer skills training to the underprivileged in the community and to help end the cycle of poverty and joblessness. Click here to read more.
