Taking pride of place on the lofty Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in South Africa’s Walker Bay Wine Region, Creation Wines affords impressive views of the towering mountain peaks that surround it. While this spectacular panorama alone would surely be enough to inspire the team to soar with the eagles, it is also the very earth beneath their feet that motivates them.
The estate was established in 2002 by Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin. According to JC (a Swiss-trained winemaker and viticulturist) Creation’s 450-million-year-old soils combine with cool maritime conditions and an exciting variety of slopes and aspects to create a truly unique terroir. Add to this the vibrant sense of innovation prevailing on the estate and it is hardly surprising that Creation is going from strength to strength.
The team has just launched a brand-new brunch pairing menu comprising five of their award-winning wines, each matched with a delectable dish. In the meantime yet another new wine and food pairing menu is waiting in the wings. Aptly named ‘The Story of Creation’, this exciting innovation will replace the estate’s classic Wine and Tapas Pairing, promising to be as popular yet with an intriguing sense of drama. The new menu will be introduced mid-June.
For the first time in more than a decade the Creation team will be taking time out. To take a well-deserved rest and also to reflect, recharge and create. This means the estate will be closed to visitors between 29 May and 9 June 2017. And that it will be reopening its doors on 10 June with among others an amazing new wine and food pairing concept – ‘The Story of Creation’. Watch this space!
Creation in the News
“On a quiet Sunday morning we went to see Carolyn and JC Martin at Creation. This is a very smart operation, with a wide range of wines, all distinguished by their purity of fruit…” To read what Jamie Goode (renowned British author with a PhD in plant biology and a wine columnist of The Sunday Express) has to say about Hermanus, the Hemel-en-Aarde and Creation, click here.
The Creation Art of Chardonnay 2015 as well as the Creation Art of Pinot Noir 2015 were recently selected as finalists in the 2017 Perswijn Wijnconcours. Click here to read more. Creation on the Move
Carolyn Martin has just been to Denmark from where she reported enthusiastically that Creation had been well received at two successful dinners: firstly at Restaurant Hummer (which means ‘lobster’ in Danish) in Nyhavn, Copenhagen and secondly at Restaurant Goma in Odense.
Then on to Scotland where JC joined her and the couple was treated to a “royal dinner” at The House of Turin in Angus. “Creation wines were paired with a menu of Scotland’s finest scallops, venison and a dessert of local rhubarb and honey panna cotta,” writes Carolyn. Next on their itinerary was a private dinner at Champany Inn, Linlithgow, West Lothian. Click here for a report on the evening by Peter Ranscombe in Scottish Field. This was followed by a private tasting in London. While JC does trade visits in Switzerland and Germany, Carolyn will be spreading her wings to visit Tallinn, Estonia.

Last week we reported on the fabulous tuna fish caught by Creation cellarmaster JC Martin and his son, Glenn. The fish weighed 107 kg and 80 kg respectively! With such a bounty in store, who can blame the Creation Culinary Team for letting their creative juices flow? Chef Francois’s Seared Tuna with wilted Spinach, Shiitake Mushroom and Berry Salad, Goat’s-Milk Cheese Mousse, Sautéed Leeks, Roasted Pistachios and Soy Cream matches the 2015 Creation Reserve Pinot Noir just perfectly. This year’s Hermanus FynArts takes place from 9 to 18 June and promises to be a feast of exhibitions, presentations, performances, workshops, films and of course food and wine. According to Creation co-owner and marketing director Carolyn Martin the Creation team looks forward to partaking in this annual event, offering not only an art exhibition but also a magnificent spread of food and wine.
“Fine winemaking is of course an art in itself and as dedicated supporters of the arts, we are proud to participate in this joyous festival again,” says Carolyn.
Hermanus FynArts is hosted in assorted venues in and around the coastal town of Hermanus – one of them being Creation Wines where the estate will be exhibiting a truly exciting installation of sculptures by the acclaimed artist Willie Botha. Click here to read more about Willie and his work.
A highlight of Creation’s participation will be a three-course dinner specially prepared by the Creation Culinary Team to harmonize with three of Creation’s award-winning wines. There will be music to match and this rare celebration of food, wine and music titled Food as Art will take place on Thursday 15 June 2017 at 18h30 at the Creation Wines Tasting Room. 8 course tapas with 8 wine pairings …. it does not get better than this!
They REALLY do set the standard in the tapas trend. Could not fault one the 8 tapas and with the wine pairing – it took it to outstanding with the perfect portion size.
I caught a glimpse of some of their other offerings – cheese and charcuterie pairings – they too looked amazing … but if you have the time go for the tapas!
Price wise I could not fault it – real value for such a high standard.
I look forward to returning and trying the brunch pairing.
In summary – in one word – Impressive!

Stephanie was super divine and knowledgeable! Probably the nicest experience I have had wine tasting ever. Many wines to taste and bought loads even though they were above budget. Didn’t care! So worth it. Book ahead if you can as Saturday’s are busy. They are open Sundays

Creation – First Class on British Airways
Good news for Pinot lovers flying British Airways during the month of May: The Creation Pinot Noir 2016 has been selected to be served on BA First Class on their Tier 1 routes. Among others these include Cape Town, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, LA and San Francisco.
This is what Andrew Sparrow, Director of Sales Travel Retail at Bibendum has to say about the wine:
Owners Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin are the inspiration behind the perfectly named Creation winery in the Pinot Noir hotspot of South Africa – the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven on Earth) close to Hermanus on the Cape. Harvest took place in late February 2016 with the wine being made in a Burgundian manner with traditional skin fermentation before twelve months maturation in French oak barrels with 25% new oak. This is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir with floral and red fruit aromas leading into a palate of sour cherry and cranberry fruit with lovely balance and purity. It makes a fine match with meaty fish, poultry and game.
