It has been with great excitement and delight that the ever-innovative Creation team launched their first Chenin Blanc (2017) this week. Not only is it one of the very few cool-climate Chenins in South Africa but also the first Chenin to be grown and made in the Hemel-en-Aarde.
The grapes for the exceptional Creation Cool-Climate Chenin Blanc were grown in a virus-free, 15-year-old vineyard in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde area. When winemaker Jean-Claude (JC) Martin was offered the grapes from this unique 1-hectare block, he simply couldn’t resist the temptation to try his hand at cool-climate Chenin. “We had great fun experimenting with this batch which was partly fermented with wild yeast,” comments JC.
But fun was only part of the story. To capture and enhance the rare essence of the cool-climate terroir that nurtured them, the grapes were gently pressed and meticulously vinified in 228-litre oak barrels, spending eight months on the lees. The limited release comprises only 5 000 bottles and has already elicited lively interest and listings from top South African restaurants.
The wine displays the most delicate shade of wild primrose with tinges of lime playing hide-and-seek in the glass. A bouquet of gentle ginger, tender tomato leaf, apple skin and honeycomb casts the first spell. On the palate the magic unfolds with crisp quince and fresh green apple flirting with the smoothness of coconut milk in the background. It is a wine that is as remarkable in its purity as it is in its joyous complexity.

Last week they reported on the first part of their trip. This week they tell us about their adventures in the UK and the French Riviera.
