Having recently regaled us with accounts of her explorations in Brittany, Burgundy and Switzerland, Creation’s Carolyn Martin now reports on her and husband JC’s wine and food experiences (14 to 17 August) in the buzzing metropolis of Jozi.
Up Close and Personal
Our trip started on a high note at The Nine Barrels where we did an ‘Up Close and Personal’ tasting. This unique establishment is part of the new redevelopment of Maboneng in Johannesburg and what made the tasting really rewarding is the fact that guests could have a one-on-one with JC, interacting and asking questions as the tasting progressed. Owner Anthony Reinhard has set up a fantastic wine bar where some of the best Cape wines are on offer together with a tapas type menu. Above the bar is an art gallery wittily named ‘AGOG’, which showcases the works of contemporary South African artists and where one can book a table for private dining. Above the gallery is a roof top whisky and gin bar where you can also order Creation wines by the glass or the bottle. The city views from here are marvellous and … rugby fans take note … The Nine Barrels is literally on the doorstep of the Ellis Park Stadium!
Creation on the Move
September will see Creation’s Carolyn Martin and Daniela Messina visiting selected venues in Europe and the UK. They look forward to hosting private client and sommelier tastings in Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Norway and then in the UK. Among their activities will also be trade tastings in Bruges, Belgium with Intervinos and in Copenhagen with Løgismose. They’re also planning a wine club tasting in Norrköping, Sweden and a private dinner in Tønsberg, Norway. Then off to the UK for WOSA’s Intrepid South Africa Tasting, the Three Wine Men Tasting and private tastings at 67 Pall Mall and Harrogate Fine Wines. More information on their whereabouts to follow.
We had the wonderful team from #GQdotcoza visit us at Creation last weekend – what a jolly bunch! #creationnation #lovecreationwines.
Creation Supports Diam Corks
We often receive queries from clients about the closures we use for our wines. Yes, they are called ‘Diam corks’ and we’ve been using them since 2008 because we prefer a natural closure which is TCA free. In fact, Creation has been one of the first South African wineries to adopt Diam and although criticised by some of our peers, we stuck to our guns. “I’m noticing Diam more and more, and would love the producers who use them to advertise the fact . . . They guarantee both 100% removal of TCA and 100% consistency of wine evolution,” writes Jancis Robinson OBE, ComMA, MW who is a British wine critic, journalist and wine writer. Why Creation should be on your Winelands List
“It’s with good reason that Creation Wines in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley keeps picking up awards for its innovative food-and-wine offering. You’ll be spoilt for choice with a menu that offers myriad ways to discover the estate’s contemporary Winelands cuisine.” To read Richard Holmes’ Eat Out review, click here.
The Hemel-en-Aarde Pebbles Education Project in partnership with Haygrove Farm has been working tirelessly on expanding the vegetable garden. The donated tunnel has provided a variety of vegetables which includes carrots, tomatoes, spinach, beans, beetroot as well as a variety of herbs. The fresh produce is incorporated into the daily meals provided to the children attending the ECD Centre and After School Care Programme.
The expansion of the project includes a shade net that will cover the existing tunnel and an additional area where more planting boxes will be laid out for more vegetables. The Grootbos Foundation has kindly offered a three-day training course to our groundsman where he will be taught the importance of soils, cultivation practices and pest and disease management for optimum crop harvesting.

Here are a few comments recently made by our visitors:
“Carolyn and Team – Distinction is an understatement! We returned and were not left disappointed with what was yet another amazing, unforgettable experience! The colorful explosion of flavors of the 7 course taste adventure were accentuated with every swirl and sip of specific cultivar and blend served – a perfect bridge of balance to be had! Phillip Marais, you skillfully took care of our table of fourteen, ensuring that our three teenagers and five children were also well nourished! You ‘read’ us well – hats off to you! The fabulous playroom was an absolute win for the four Harper children, allowing Mom and Dad’s palates to appreciate and indulge in their mouthwatering experience. The Story of Creation has no ending for us as we will return and continue with Chapter 8 of our Creation journey. Graham, Harper and Gebhardt Families – Johannesburg“- Lindy Graham (Post-tasting feedback)
“This wine estate is of excellent service and quality. We visited in 2015 when we were engaged. 2016 while on honeymoon and 2017 for our anniversary. The staff are friendly and efficient, with good reason too as the setting and views are breath taking. We loved the complimentary MCC as welcoming drink as well as the special dessert that was served. Well done, you should be proud of yourselves.” – Ashley Carolus (Post-tasting feedback)
