Earlier this year we reported on the Pinot Noir harvest saying that the smiles on the harvest and cellar teams’ faces certainly tell a story! Rains at the right time set the scene, with the prevailing south-easterly wind adding another blessing to the scenario. This wind (known as the ‘Cape Doctor’) is characteristic of Creation and served to dry the vineyards after the rain, preventing disease and keeping the vines and grapes healthy.
Creation viticulturist and cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin regards Pinot Noir as the ultimate test in winemaking. Having qualified as a viticulturist and winemaker in Switzerland, JC honed his skills on Pinot Noir and upon moving to South Africa bridged the gap between Old and New World winemaking to establish his own inimitable style. Commenting on the 2017 vintage he said: “Due to a well thought-through pruning schedule and optimum weather conditions during the 2017 harvest, our vineyards could be picked block by block with the grapes showing optimum concentration, high natural acidity and perfect phenolic ripeness. The crop size was perfect thanks to meticulous vineyard management during the growth period as well as ideal weather conditions such as wind factors during the flowering season.”
By the end of February all the Pinot Noir had reached the cellar and the enthusiastic cellar team reported on some exciting experimentation with wild ferments. The first two batches had already been pressed and showed hauntingly beautiful and vivacious bouquets. And now these early promises have been realised with the exquisite 2017 Creation Pinot Noir proudly taking centre stage.
The wine is deep ruby in colour, gleaming and inviting in the glass. Intense and fragrant, the bouquet combines a beautiful bevy of red berries with elegant whiffs of vanilla and wood spice. These follow through on the medium-bodied palate where soft, supple tannins contribute to the structure.
According to Creation pairing guru Carolyn Martin the 2017 Creation Pinot Noir is an excellent companion to seared tuna but the wine is delightfully versatile, offering a wide and adventurous food pairing repertoire. When visiting Creation don’t miss out on the sensational Kiss and Tell Wine and Food Pairing. It celebrates the estate’s flagship cultivars, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with taste combinations made in heaven! An example is the Creation Pinot Noir paired with Strawberry and Raspberry Soup, Tarragon and Za’atar Biscuit and a mix of Beetroot Shoots.

Who’s Who on the Creation Crew (2)
To keep things shipshape at Creation requires the input of a great team, ranging from skippers JC and Carolyn Martin to (literally) all hands on deck! This week we take pleasure in featuring Stephanie van Rooyen, who having joined Creation at the age of 19, is now, three years later, one of the leading lights in the Tasting Room. Whether it’s her bubbly personality or the sometimes quirky way in which she presents the intricacies of wine, Stephanie never fails to put a smile on guests’ faces.

On the Ageing of Wine
“Nie alle wyn word gemaak om weg te bêre nie. Maar dies wat wel gemaak word met die oog daarop dat dit goed sal verouder en jare later eers optimaal geniet sal word, is baie spesiaal.” Thus wrote Winifred Bowman in an article in Die Burger (Kaap), Versnit, in which the 2008 Creation Pinot Noir is quoted as an example of a rare and sought-after wine that has matured well. Rotarian members Ann Wright, Johan Augustyn, Kees Hoeben, Richard Beards and Bernhard Maisch recently visited the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project and reported back accordingly:
“Thank you so much for your warm welcome at the project site Bergplaas Farm and the introduction to the entire educational project involving the GG application for 3 new school buildings (bricks and mortar within the focus areas of RI) and the early childhood development and education programme, which is impressively taken care of by Pebbles. Our Rotary group was very much impressed with the work which has already been done. Congratulations.”
Pebbles is also expecting a visit from a Norwegian group of Rotarians sometime next week while the Rotary District Governor will be visiting the project this coming Thursday.
FuW visits Creation
Creation recently had the pleasure of hosting a wine and food pairing lunch for members of the German Fachverband unabhängiger Weinreferenten e.V. (FuW) or Independent Wine Lecturers Association with Petra Mayer from WOSA Germany accompanying them. The focus of the visit was on expanding their knowledge of South African wines and we were delighted to play our part.

Here are a few comments recently made by our visitors:
“Went to Hermanus to visit a friend for coffee, look out for whales, both successful and then we decided to go to Creation that had been recommended. Couldn’t have their 7 Course with wine pairings as we already had a dinner date…. we chose cheese and charcuterie boards, very different, very nice, had Creation wine pairings – excellent.
The 7 Course looked great value for money, next time! The views were beautiful, gardens and sculptures exquisite and restaurant very welcoming. Wine tasting also very good.” – Selbourne (TripAdvisor)
“The restaurant is located in the vineyard. The road from Hermanus is beautiful. The restaurant offers delicious wine and food pairing. It is a very nice way to enjoy lunch in a special environment.” – Jean-David T (TripAdvisor)
