The last grapes for our bubbly and still wines were picked on Thursday 23 March. All that remains to be harvested are approximately three tons of grapes for our Cape Vintage and this will be done in a week’s time. In the meantime we’ve asked members of the hardworking Creation team to comment on the 2017 harvest.
Cellarmaster JC Martin:
Due to a well thought-through pruning schedule and optimum weather conditions during the 2017 harvest, our vineyards could be picked block by block with the grapes showing optimum concentration, high natural acidity and perfect phenolic ripeness. The crop size was perfect thanks to meticulous vineyard practices and management during the growth period as well as ideal weather conditions such as wind factors during the flowering season. The Sauvignon Blanc came in at 7 to 8 tons per hectare, the Chardonnay at 6 tons and the red grapes at around 4,5 tons per hectare.
An enthusiastic Bobby Wallace (our South African intern) remarked:
During the middle of harvest I was learning to multitask with white and red grapes coming into the cellar for about a week; then it became more relaxed as the reds came in systematically. This was a huge learning opportunity and I found it particularly exciting and stimulating to work with the wide range of cultivars, given the great weather window of opportunity in the Hemel-en-Aarde.
This year’s Hermanus FynArts takes place from 9 to 18 June and promises to be a feast of exhibitions, presentations, performances, workshops, films and of course food and wine. According to Creation co-owner and marketing director Carolyn Martin the Creation team looks forward to partaking in this annual event, offering not only an art exhibition but also a magnificent spread of food and wine.
“Fine winemaking is of course an art in itself and as dedicated supporters of the arts, we are proud to participate in this joyous festival again,” says Carolyn.
Hermanus FynArts is hosted in assorted venues in and around the coastal town of Hermanus – one of them being Creation Wines where the estate will be exhibiting a truly exciting installation of sculptures by the acclaimed artist Willie Botha. Click here to read more about Willie and his work.
A highlight of Creation’s participation will be a three-course dinner specially prepared by the Creation Culinary Team to harmonize with three of Creation’s award-winning wines. There will be music to match and this rare celebration of food, wine and music titled Food as Art will take place on Thursday 15 June 2017 at 18h30 at the Creation Wines Tasting Room. Jamie Goode and Treve Ring at Creation
Last Sunday Jamie Goode, a renowned British wine writer and critic with a PhD in plant biology, and Treve Ring, a well known Canadian wine writer, joined Creation owners JC and Carolyn Martin for a tasting of the estate’s award-winning wines. Europe, UK and Canada here we come!
May 2017 will see Creation’s JC and Carolyn Martin visiting selected venues in Europe, the UK and Canada. Carolyn looks forward to hosting private client and sommelier tastings in Denmark and the UK. Among the events in Scotland will be a tasting at House of Turin and a private dinner at Champany Inn, Edinburgh. JC will be joining her for the UK tastings and then set off on a trade visit to Canada. More information on their whereabouts, the exact dates and venues will follow in the coming weeks.

Good news for Pinot lovers flying British Airways during the month of May: The Creation Pinot Noir 2016 has been selected to be served on BA First Class on their Tier 1 routes. Among others these include Cape Town, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, LA and San Francisco.

Chocolate and Wine pairing is not a new idea but it is fun. That said, I’m probably old fashioned and would’ve enjoyed a savoury option for wine tasting instead. Nonetheless, the dark chocolate (first genuinely African) used in the pairing is nothing short of ‘heavenly’. Look out for their fabulous Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. So after a less than stellar experience last night in Franschhoek – we have had a stunning foodie experience at Creation Wines today. Unpretentious yet up there with one of the best food and wine experiences we have ever had. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, the three course meal and wine pairing sublime. Carolyn the perfect co-owner host and Jean-Claude clearly passionate about his Wines. We will definitely be back for the tapas tasting.
