Vine viruses (especially leafroll) are regarded as one of the wine producer’s biggest enemies as they have the potential to not only reduce the lifespan of a vineyard drastically but also to seriously hamper the quality of the grapes.
In their quest to contribute to the establishment of virus-free vineyards in South Africa, VinPro in collaboration with Vititec, Winetech and Creation Wines hosted a workshop at Creation on Monday 8 May. Among those present were representatives of Vititec, VinPro and Winetech as well as members of the media.
The issue of virus-free vineyards has been very close to Creation owners Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin’s hearts ever since they established their estate on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in 2002. Today Creation is an important source of virus-free material, supplying Vititec and the industry with their cuttings in order to propagate virus-free clonal material. In Celebration of Creation Syrah, Grenache
With the Creation 2015 Syrah, Grenache blend scoring a fabulous 92 points in Neal Martin’s report on South African wines, the Creation Culinary Team decided to wow the palates with a matching masterpiece! The well-endowed wine rewards with alluring aromas of ripe black olive elegantly complemented by whiffs of pepper. On the palate intense flavours of ripe plum mingle with black pepper, tapenade and umami. The delectable Duck Breast with Red Wine Jus, Roasted Butternut and Carrot Purée, Courgette, Trio of Beetroot, Shiitake Polenta Cake and Kale Crisp is a dish of many flavours, textures and layers – a perfect match for the intriguing complexity of the wine. Speaking of the Creation 2015 Syrah, Grenache: in an article that appeared in Die Burger (Kaap) Versnit of 10 May 2017 the wine is featured among Versnit’s top ten red blends and described as “‘n Rhônestyl van syrah en grenache … die eerste geur wat jou tref [is] sonryp olywe in die pas met witpeper, donker bessies en fynbos.” Click here to read the complete article.
Creation’s Jean-Claude Martin is not only a winemaker of note but has now also proven to be a fisherman of fame. And his son Glenn follows in his footsteps. Father and son recently each caught a tamaai tuna (107 kg and 80 kg respectively). JC’s fish is the second largest ever caught at the Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club!
May 2017 will see Creation’s JC and Carolyn Martin visiting selected venues in Europe and the UK. Carolyn looks forward to hosting private client and sommelier tastings in Denmark and then in the UK with JC. Among the events in Scotland will be a tasting at House of Turin and a private dinner at Champany Inn, Edinburgh. Then to London, which includes a private tasting on 17 May. While JC does trade visits in Switzerland and Germany, Carolyn will be spreading her wings to visit Tallinn, Estonia.
This year’s Hermanus FynArts takes place from 9 to 18 June and promises to be a feast of exhibitions, presentations, performances, workshops, films and of course food and wine. According to Creation co-owner and marketing director Carolyn Martin the Creation team looks forward to partaking in this annual event, offering not only an art exhibition but also a magnificent spread of food and wine.
“Fine winemaking is of course an art in itself and as dedicated supporters of the arts, we are proud to participate in this joyous festival again,” says Carolyn.
Hermanus FynArts is hosted in assorted venues in and around the coastal town of Hermanus – one of them being Creation Wines where the estate will be exhibiting a truly exciting installation of sculptures by the acclaimed artist Willie Botha. Click here to read more about Willie and his work.
A highlight of Creation’s participation will be a three-course dinner specially prepared by the Creation Culinary Team to harmonize with three of Creation’s award-winning wines. There will be music to match and this rare celebration of food, wine and music titled Food as Art will take place on Thursday 15 June 2017 at 18h30 at the Creation Wines Tasting Room. Creation – First Class on British Airways
Good news for Pinot lovers flying British Airways during the month of May: The Creation Pinot Noir 2016 has been selected to be served on BA First Class on their Tier 1 routes. Among others these include Cape Town, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, LA and San Francisco.
This is what Andrew Sparrow, Director of Sales Travel Retail at Bibendum has to say about the wine: “Owners Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin are the inspiration behind the perfectly named Creation winery in the Pinot Noir hotspot of South Africa – the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven on Earth) close to Hermanus on the Cape. Harvest took place in late February 2016 with the wine being made in a Burgundian manner with traditional skin fermentation before twelve months maturation in French oak barrels with 25% new oak. This is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir with floral and red fruit aromas leading into a palate of sour cherry and cranberry fruit with lovely balance and purity. It makes a fine match with meaty fish, poultry and game.”

Creation Wines makes an excellent first impression when driving through the vineyards and parking next to the beautiful gardens. Stepping into the restaurant the pleasurable experience continues. Although we had not booked for a wine-tasting, we were accommodated with a smile. The person assigned to us for the wine-tasting was extremely knowledgeable about the wines and had a great sense of humour. The wines are excellent though a little on the expensive side. We did not stay for lunch, but will definitely be sure to book next time and have a true Creation experience! Highly recommended!!
