“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
On the cold winter’s morning of 18 July, the Creation Wines team set out to celebrate Mandela Day with the children of the local Pebbles Education Project. And what an exciting time it was!
The decision to spend the 67 minutes for Mandela by having old-fashioned ‘boeresport’ with the learners turned out to be a winner. The weather was bright and clear, the participants in high spirits and great fun was had by all. The kids from Grade 1 through to Grade 9 competed in age groups and all achievements were greeted with pure delight, not only by their peers, but by everybody present at this joyful event.
The programme included items such as the traditional three-legged race, sack race and potato-spoon race to mention but a few. True sportspersonship was the order of the day with the eager participants working in teams and celebrating every moment of triumph. A highlight was the Creation team and Teacher’s team racing against each other for top honours.
“On days like this one comes to realise again that life is about having fun and that the small things in life make a big difference. We are proud to be part of the Pebbles initiative and who knows … one day we may even have the pleasure of welcoming some of these inspired youngsters to our team,” comments Creation’s Carolyn Martin.
From the learners’ side the vote is unanimous: a roaring success! Here are but a few of the comments:
Ek het die aartappels geniet. – Marshell, Gr 1
Waar ons ons voete vasgemaak het was baie lekker. – Sandile, Gr 4
Ek het van alles gehou. – Muriel, Gr 6
Ek het van al die sport gehou en ek wil net vir hulle dankie sê. – Thandokazi, Gr 9
