Creating Wines of Distinction

Creation among the Champions

. . . just like their World Cup winning rugby team, South Africa is firing on all cylinders. You just need to be selective and know where to look . . . As someone privileged with more than his fair share of rare and expensive Grand Cru Burgundy and First Growths, I can unhesitatingly state that the best of South Africa punches at the same weight . . . Trust me when I say that in a decade’s time, you might well rue not grabbing some of these exceptional wines. – Neal Martin MW

Yes, Neal Martin’s eagerly awaited 2019 South Africa Wine Report is out and Creation on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is thrilled to have no less than eight wines scoring 90 points or more in what is regarded as one of the most authoritative guides to SA wines.

Rating the 2017 Creation Syrah, Grenache 94/100, Neal says it is the most seductive of all Creation’s recent releases. “It has a very attractive bouquet of blueberry, black currant, crushed violet and crushed stone aromas . . . harmonious, focused and pure from start to finish. The texture is caressing, yet it remains beautifully composed, with an almost Burgundy-like allure.”

Another top scorer is the 2018 Creation Reserve Chardonnay (94/100) described by Neal as “. . . almost Meursault-like in style, featuring grilled walnut and light pine nut aromas. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with great depth: gorgeous streaks of orange pith infusing the citrus fruit, and a precise, mineral-driven finish.”

Rated 93/100, the 2018 Art of Chardonnay is praised for delivering “a fine bead of acidity and steely tension before fanning out on the pithy, lightly spiced finish”. Neal finds the wine quite mercurial in the glass and deserving one or two years in the bottle – although it will be difficult to resist!

Equally high in his estimation (93/100) is the 2017 Creation Reserve Syrah which includes 30% whole-bunch fruit, matured in French oak for 18 months. “The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins  . . .  and a velvety, white pepper and bay-leaf- tinged finish.”

The eight Creation wines scoring 90 and more are:

2018 Creation (Estate) Chardonnay – 90 +

2018 Creation Emma’s Pinot Noir – 90

2018 Creation Reserve Pinot Noir – 91

2018 Creation Art of Pinot Noir – 92

2018 Creation Art of Chardonnay – 93

2017 Creation Reserve Syrah – 93

2018 Creation Reserve Chardonnay – 94

2017 Creation Syrah, Grenache – 94

I can not agree less on Neal's view for these sought after wines. It's so motivating to see South African wines being equated to Grand Crus and First Growths. Congratulations JC and keep the consistence. Oh! interesting to see that the Reserve Chardonnay punched more than the Art.
