One thing can be said about the Creation team without fear of contradiction: their sense of culinary adventure (coupled with their wanderlust) knows no bounds! To stay on top of the wine and food pairing game, Carolyn Martin and Daniela Messina recently jetted off again, this time to explore some of the hottest cuisine spots in the UK and Europe. The trip brought them into contact with an exciting diversity of influences, both cultural and culinary, which says Carolyn, always triggers the imagination and is a wonderful source of inspiration. What follows is her account of the first leg of their trip.
First stop was London where I had the pleasure of presenting at WOSA’s great white blend tasting. The ever innovative WOSA UK team also organised a restaurant safari which took sommeliers, restaurateurs and wine writers in Land Rovers on a tasting spree led and by Richard Siddle. The result was unexpected and fantastic: a listing with Gladwin Brothers who have four fabulous fish restaurants in London.
That evening Creation, along with some other great South African brands, participated in the SWIG New Wave private client tasting at Phonica Records in Poland Street – a buzzing and fun event.
The next day we presented a wine and dine pairing at Kinghams Restaurant in Surrey – and what a quaint and charming building it is. They serve modern British cuisine and have just been voted the best restaurant in Surrey by Surrey Life magazine. We are delighted to have a couple of Creation wines on their menu. Our stay at Tor Hatch, a luxury family home in Sandy Lane, Surrey was another treat and a quintessentially English country experience.
Then back to London and the Bibendum restaurant where we started our day with flowers and breakfast. I sneaked a couple of photos of the original Michelin posters and décor that inspired the Michelin company to start the guide – to boost the demand for their car tyres! 😊
Next on our itinerary: a Walker & Wodehouse tasting at The Drop which is a super wine bar at Coal Drops Yard, a once industrial area which has become the new trendy part of North London. I recently attended a Saatchi and Saatchi Emerging Artists pop-up in the area and this time we did a trade wine tasting for Bibendum clients. Our contribution was the Creation Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as the Creation Viognier. Other Bibendum premium South African producers also participated, and we paired our wines with a sophisticated barbeque/braai cooked in the Big Green Egg.
This was followed by a private client tasting at B’acino Wine Bar in Scrutton Street, Hackney that evening. We enjoyed meeting friends and colleagues of Terry O’leary and auctioned a case of six Creation wines which went for £1 000. This was divided between the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Project and St Catherine’s Hospice. Creation wines are now available at B’acino, please support us!
Our next private client tasting was at the h Club in Covent Garden. What a beautiful venue and right in the centre of London. Some 50 guests attended and it was great meeting up with friends, family and existing as well as new clients. This concluded our activities in London and surrounds; the next day we headed for Prague which proved to be an extraordinary adventure. More about our travels next week.
