Creating Wines of Distinction

Doing the Culinary Highways and Byways of Europe

Always in search of new flavour adventures and intriguing combinations, Creation’s Carolyn Martin and Daniela Messina recently took to the culinary highways and byways of Europe once more. This time to Tallinn, Wroclaw, Tønsberg, Brummen, Haarlem, London, Chilworth and Marazion.   What follows is an abridged version of their inspirational journey.

Wednesday, 27 March – Tallinn, Estonia

What motivated our visit to this fascinating restaurant-lounge in the heart of Tallinn’s medieval Old Town is the fact that we had the pleasure of hosting its owners, Kadi-Liis and Tarmo Tamm, at Creation earlier this year. They loved our wines and invited us to put our pairing skills to the test when next we’re in their part of the world. Always up for a challenge, Bollywood was top of our itinerary once we’d arrived in Tallinn. And what a treat! The aromatic Asian-style cuisine is skillfully prepared and thoughtfully put together and we particularly loved the Kerala fish curry of red snapper with fried rice – an extraordinary combination of layered flavours and textures offering lightness and intensity at the same time. The wonderfully aromatic yet crisp Creation Viognier was the perfect match and the pairing was in one word, sublime!

Thursday, 28 March – Wroclaw, Poland

This was our first visit to Poland, and I frankly didn’t know what to expect. What a surprise to find the architectural splendour of yesteryear interspersed with the latest in sophisticated infrastructure; the restaurant scene buzzing and the menus brimming with inspiration. We were there for less than 24 hours during which Daniela and I hosted a tasting for 15 young sommeliers at Restaurant Przystan in Wroclaw. Following the tasting we were treated to a most delectable lunch. My dish of seabream fish and steamed vegetables was a perfect match for the Creation Pinot Noir while Daniela enjoyed a scrumptious dish of ravioli stuffed with veal, parmesan shavings and rocket, also with the Pinot Noir.

Paul, Leo and Michael from our Polish agent, Redi Wines then accompanied us on the exciting Beatles Fan Walk of which I include a video clipWroclaw is an exciting multinational student town and apart from visiting several restaurants where we paired our wines with the food and organized a few listings, we spent some time at the Vertigo Jazz Club Restaurant which rivals Ronnie Scott’s in London!

With Paul as our exemplary host, we were treated to some fantastic new Polish cuisine including a stellar passionfruit cheesecake at 1450 Smoke House Restaurant that paired exceptionally well with our Creation Sauvignon Blanc.

Friday, 29 March – Tønsberg, Norway

It’s always good to go back and see old friends and the Herr & Fru never fails to delight us. Since it was fully booked for our wine and food pairing on the Friday evening, some guests happily took their places at the bar counter. A highlight was Norwegian reindeer, a speciality game meat that was prepared with quail egg, wild mushrooms and samphire, which paired beautifully with the delicate notes of the Creation Reserve Pinot Noir. The mushrooms picked up on the earthiness of the wine while the samphire underscored the freshness of the Pinot.  Among the familiar faces at the pairing were a few guests who recently visited Creation on one of Jon Terje Bruns’s Global Wine Tours. Saturday, 30 March – Brummen, Netherlands

Having been to Kasteel Engelenburg before – I did a pairing presentation there last year – I knew what to expect and yet a visit to the magical castle with its beautiful grounds and waterways is always a new experience. Of special interest to us is the fact that the cellar has the most extensive selection of South African wines in Europe.  We were invited by the owners, Johan and Carin Agricola, who have strong connections with South Africa, having started the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. Sommelier Arjen Pleij, a highly qualified vinologist with a special interest in South African wine, and his team took excellent care of us, treating us royally to a 7-course pairing dinner. Click here to find out more about Kasteel Engelenburg.

Then on to Haarlem, but we’ll continue Carolyn and Daniela’s taste adventures next week.
