Creating Wines of Distinction

Creation: Memorable Wines from Mature Vines

“As Creation’s vines get older, so the quality of the Pinot Noirs they produce continues to increase,” says Tim Atkin MW in his latest (2020) South Africa Special Report. And it is not only the Creation Pinot Noir that he rates highly. In his report no less than ten Creation wines qualify for a Medal of Excellence, which means a score of 90+. Three of these wines also qualify for a Gold Medal: the 2019 Art of Creation Pinot Noir at 97 points, the 2019 Art of Creation Chardonnay at 96 points and the 2019 Emma’s Pinot Noir at 95 points. To put Creation’s achievement into perspective: of the 1,328 wines tasted only 150 qualify for the coveted Gold Medal.

A British Master of Wine, Tim is a distinguished wine journalist and an expert on South African wines. His report, now in its eighth edition, is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative overviews of quality South African wines. In an introduction to his 2020 report Tim says: “Against formidable odds, South Africa is making some of the greatest wines in its history.” Creation owners Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin applaud this view with Carolyn saying: “We truly value Tim’s opinion and encouragement, especially considering the aftermath of the Covid-19 ban on wine sales.”

Creation’s top-scoring wine, the 2019 Art of Creation Pinot Noir, is one of only three Pinots in the report to boast 97 points and one of only 23 wines to receive a score of 97 points and more. Tim describes the vintage as the best bottling of the Art of Creation to date. “This wouldn’t look out of place in a line-up of Gevrey Chambertin Premiers Crus and what a wine it is: intense, aromatic and vibrant . . . Structured, serious and built to age in bottle, with dark berry fruit and a dusting of Asian spices.”

Commenting on the 2019 Art of Creation Chardonnay (96 points) Tim says it is “… a beautifully judged wine with subtle toast and grilled cashews on the nose, lemon and lime flavours, lovely texture and weight and a long, refreshing finish.”

Another Creation gold medallist is the 2019 Emma’s Pinot Noir. Scoring it 95 points Tim describes the wine as “. . .  taut, savoury and layered, with lots of blueberry and raspberry fruit, plenty of pepper spice from 50% whole bunches and effortless concentration.”

Grown in a single, 19-year-old block on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, the 2019 Creation Chardonnay Reserve is rated an excellent 94. “Rich and concentrated, it’s more Meursault than Puligny Montrachet, with pear, beeswax and lemon butter flavours, scented 30% new wood and the acidity of the vintage,” says Tim.

The 2019 Creation Pinot Noir Reserve also scores a whopping 94 points and singing its praises Tim says the wine is “. . . serious, textured and layered, with black cherry and vanilla spice and the concentration and acidity to age.”

The ten Creation wines awarded Medals of Excellence are:

Creation Art of Pinot Noir 2019 – 97

Creation Art of Chardonnay 2019 – 96

Creation Emma’s Pinot Noir 2019 – 95

Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2019 – 94

Creation Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc 2019 – 92

Creation Pinot Noir 2019 – 91

Creation Syrah Reserve 2018 – 91

Commenting on these achievements Creation Cellarmaster JC Martin says one of the joys arising from the estate’s virus-free, now mature vineyards is the ability to produce terroir-expressive wines of ever-increasing quality. “It is rewarding to receive such good feedback from a wine critic of international stature and we’re proud to share the quality with wine lovers across the world.”
