The perfect Pinot Noir, how would one describe it?
Flamboyant and berry rich yet elegant with delicate tannins and earthy tones of forest floor, this Prince of Reds has captured the affections of many since its earliest mention in 1395.
Despite the ever-growing passion for Pinot this rather fickle grape remains one of the more difficult vine species to cultivate. It is shy and delicate with a thin skin and tightly packed berries which makes the grapes vulnerable to rot. Meticulous canopy management is therefore essential. It furthermore requires a cool climate to develop good flavour intensity, yet at the same time it is susceptible to frost. So the list of demands goes on, making Pinot a rather temperamental grape to deal with.
Having said that, it is a well-known fact that the Hemel-en-Aarde with its cool climate and clay-rich soils is eminently suited to the cultivation of top quality Pinot Noir. And every year the producers join forces to celebrate their love for this highly revered cultivar. The seventh Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir Celebration – aptly titled ‘Under Pinot Skies’ – takes place on the 24th and 25th of January and promises to be yet another highlight on the wine calendar.
According to Carolyn Martin the Creation team looks forward to participating in this glittering event again. “It gives the Hemel-en-Aarde the ideal opportunity to showcase the quality of Pinot Noir wines produced in this cooler climate region of South Africa.” Creation presently has no less than four award-winning Pinots in their portfolio, the quality of which has recently inspired Greg Sherwood MW to write that Creation has ‘cracked the enigma code for great Pinot Noir in South Africa’.
