A Collaboration against all Odds
Who says miracles don’t happen anymore? Even in these restrictive times of Covid-19, three elated Creation team members have been given the opportunity of widening their career horizons by gaining valuable experience in the hospitality industry of the Netherlands.
In June this year I received an email from my friend Arjen Pleij who is the operational manager at Kasteel Engelenburg in Brummen, Netherlands. He generously offered to take on a few members of our culinary team as interns during wintertime, when things are slow at Creation. Everyone was excited about the possibility but at the same time, doubtful that it would be possible to get visas due to current travel restrictions.
Realising how much this learning opportunity would mean to our team, I left no stone unturned. Thanks to the Kasteel Engelenburg management, the Consulate General of the Netherlands and the Western Cape Government, what looked like a moon-shot turned into reality!
Right now Sous Chef Charl van Wyk is at Kasteel Engelenburg, working with Michelin Chef Niels Minkman. Charl has been working for Creation Wines for almost five years and this is his second opportunity to gain international experience: “It gives me a chance to broaden my knowledge and learn new skills, which I can share with my South African team.”
Commis Chef Abongile Mafevuka arrived in the Netherlands this past Sunday to work with Michelin Chef Niels Dooijeweert at Restaurant Broederenklooster in the city of Zutphen. Abongile describes his work at Creation as a beautiful experience: “I learn every day, especially about wine and food pairing, and also about myself. The opportunity to go to the Netherlands is exhilarating but also daunting. I have never been overseas and cannot wait to experience new cultures and learn new skills.”
The third intern, Nomvula Ngqolowa, is also based at Restaurant Broederenklooster, working as Front of House. She started working at Creation six years ago, first as a receptionist and now as a floor assistant: “At Creation, we have many roles and work across a wide range of departments.” Commenting on the opportunity to go to the Netherlands she says, “I am grateful and delighted and look forward to learning more and bringing home some new skills and knowledge.”
The three Creation team members will be spending a 3-month internship in the Netherlands. We wish them a fruitful and enjoyable working adventure and want to thank Vinites, our agents in the Netherlands, for their support and collaboration. We hope to have a reciprocal arrangement with Kasteel Engelenburg during our busy summer months next year.
A Showcase of Sublime Wine and Food
Seven days of Syrah & Venison: 21 – 28 August 2021 10:00 – 16:00
Winter is not only the season for red wine but also the time when exotic meat varieties such as springbok, zebra and kudu find their way onto the table. And Syrah is without a doubt the drink for the occasion! It is a known fact that Syrah, with its sweet and spicy nuances, shares a unique flavour bond with South African game meat, offering a unique tasting experience. In celebration, the Creation Culinary Team has created a superb spread, including their scrumptious Eland Fillet, Polenta, Parmesan, Quince and Broccoli which pairs perfectly with the 2019 Creation Reserve Syrah.
Creation in the news
"I took my sense of smell for granted until I wanted to check if the milk was off. Sniffing stuff in the kitchen is a big part of my cooking experience; things may look fine but a quick whiff will tell you more."
