“When I reflected upon why South Africa has perhaps affected me more than any other southern hemisphere country I have covered in my career, one word sprang to mind: soul.” Thus writes Neal Martin MW, one of the most recognised names in international wine writing, in his 2020 South Africa Wine Report.

The eagerly awaited report has just been published and Creation Wines on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is proud to have no less than eight wines scoring 90 points and more. It is the second year in a row that eight Creation wines have received such high ratings in this authoritative guide to SA wines. Marketing Director Carolyn Martin says the team is delighted indeed.“At Creation we are passionate about what we do. Our guests often remark on how thoughtfully and lovingly our wines and food are made and matched. We simply love what we do and are thankful when this is noticed.”

The Art of Creation Range

Rating the 2019 Creation Art of Chardonnay a whopping 94/100, Neal describes it as an outstanding Chardonnay that does not put a foot wrong! “It has a vivid bouquet of mineral-rich tropical fruit, passion fruit and orange zest and a very slight reduction that works a treat. The palate is extremely well balanced, exuding poise and livewire tension with lovely orange pith and tangerine infused citrus fruit, a silver bead of acidity and wonderful nerve on the finish.”

Commenting on the 2019 Creation Reserve Chardonnay (93/100) Neal says it has a bouquet of mineral-rich citrus fruit, red apple, vervain tea and light hazelnut aromas. “The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant, offering endearing tropical tones toward the finish. Superb persistency here. A really refined and quite sophisticated Chardonnay that will give at least a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure.”

Among Creation’s top scoring reds is the 2019 Emma’s Pinot Noir (92/100) which is a selection of only four barrels chosen by Cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin. “It has the most refined nose . . .  offering a mixture of red and black fruit, some lovely undergrowth scents and just a faint hint of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a mineral led finish. Excellent.”

Harvest at Creation

Also rated 92/100, the 2018 Creation Reserve Syrah is praised for offering dense black and mulberry fruit, light floral notes and a touch of menthol. “The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe black cherry and bilberry fruit . . . it has good weight and a judicious touch of black pepper on the finish. Just delicious.”

The consistently high ratings for Creation wines from highly regarded international Masters of Wine are rewarding and confirm the estate’s focus on producing superior wines of elegance and finesse, says Carolyn Martin. In his 2020 report Tim Atkins MW rated 10 Creation wines 90 and more, with the 2019 Creation Art of Pinot Noir scoring an impressive 97 points and the 2019 Creation Art of Chardonnay 96 points. The 2019 Creation Emma’s Pinot Noir wasn’t far behind with 95 points, while both the 2019 Creation Reserve Chardonnay and the 2019 Creation Reserve Pinot Noir were rated a proud 94.

All in all, 11 Creation wines scored 90 and more in Neal Martin’s and Tim Atkin’s latest reports.
