Platter’s by Diners Club International has awarded Creation’s Art of Chardonnay 2020 “Wine of the Year” in its 2022 edition.
Platter’s has just announced the five-star wines in its 2022 edition and Creation is proud to have no less than four wines in this prestigious line-up. The top performers are: Creation The Art of Chardonnay 2020, Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2020, Creation The Art of Pinot Noir 2020 and Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2020.
Commenting on these achievements, Creation co-owner and marketing director Carolyn Martin says: “We are honoured by these ratings coming from what must be South Africa’s most influential wine guide. They certainly bolster our estate’s proud track record for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are our flagship cultivars.”
The Platter’s Wine Guide is now in its 42nd edition and this year 234 wines across 28 categories have been awarded the coveted 5-star rating. Wines qualifying for this maximum ranking are subjected to a rigorous process of sighted and blind assessment by a team of experts. Only wines judged to be “superlative, a South African classic” are allocated five stars, which is equal to 95 points, or better, on the 100-point rating scale.
According to Carolyn the Creation team is especially pleased with and proud of its Wine of the Year award – the Creation Art of Chardonnay 2020 which, at the top of its category, scored 97/100. She describes this single-site specific, barrel selection as the ‘Queen of White Wines’ – a wine with steely tension, yet elegantly refined.
Another single-site specific, barrel selection is the Creation Art of Pinot Noir 2020. Rated at 96/100, Carolyn depicts the wine as elegant and beautifully scented. “It has an abundance of whole bunch spice and texture, fine-grained tannins and good concentration.”
Rated at 95/100, the Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2020 is a single-vineyard wine with a personality all of its own: vibrant, with fragrant grapefruit and apple, a hint of honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon.
The fourth Creation wine in the 5-star Platter’s line-up is the Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2020 at 95/100. Grown in a single 18-year-old vineyard parcel, it is an intense and well-structured Pinot which rewards with succulent black cherry and raspberry supported by fine oak.
Asked to comment on Creation’s 5-star performance, co-owner and cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin says: “Our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines are now nearly 20 years old and as our vineyards mature so the quality of the grapes becomes better and better. In the cellar we adhere to the philosophy of ‘enhancing the beauty of nature’. When you’re harvesting quality fruit it is not necessary to manipulate the wine. Rather guide it gently through the process to preserve the sense of place.”
