Creating Wines of Distinction

That’s a Wrap for 2021!

At a recent media lunch kindly hosted by the Western Cape Government, I was given the opportunity to comment on the journey that led to Creation attaining its position as No 10 in the 2021 World’s Best Vineyards and No 1 in Africa. The gist of my response was that this global award is not just for Creation, it is a tribute to all our stakeholders and the South African Wine World.

What has been a truly eventful year for Creation is drawing to a close – and what a pleasure to reflect on the highlights. While these highlights are linked by the golden thread of energy and innovation emanating from our team, none of our achievements would have been possible without the encouragement and motivation that came from our loyal clients.

A huge thank you to you all!

This past year saw Creation receiving two awards at the prestigious Great Wine Capitals (GWC) Best of Wine Tourism Awards: the Wine Tourism Services as well as the Wine Tourism Restaurant Award for 2022. Hospitality is the art of creating an experience and we are proud indeed that our efforts are being acknowledged.

Another excitement has been the allocation of the coveted 5-star rating for no less than four of our wines in the 2022 Platter’s South African Wine Guide. The top performers are: Creation The Art of Chardonnay 2020, Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2020, Creation The Art of Pinot Noir 2020 and Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2020 – with the Art of Chardonnay announced as Chardonnay of the Year.

Confirming the quality of our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the eight Medals of Excellence – scores of 90+ – allocated by Tim Atkin in his South Africa 2021 Special Report. Neal Martin too, scored eight of our wines 90 points and more in his recent SA Wine Report; three of which are Chardonnays and two Pinot Noirs.

At Creation we are committed to protecting our natural heritage and preserving the riches for future generations. We were therefore thrilled to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence as WWF Conservation Champions in July this year. Nature lovers also applaud the beautiful, environmentally positive biome recently installed at the entrance of the Tasting Room. Then there is our new Vineyard and Fynbos Walk, presently under construction – watch this space …

Those who know me will know that the growing of young South African talent is close to my heart. What a pleasure therefore that three members of our culinary team were recently given the opportunity of gaining valuable experience in the Netherlands, working in 5-star establishments alongside Michelin chefs.

At Creation we love to delight and surprise our guests with offerings that remain fresh and always on trend. A shining example is our recently launched Experience Creation Pairing Menu, brimming with the scents of summer and all the joys of fresh, locally sourced produce. Another culinary innovation has been the online Creation Sensation Pairing Kit which continues to enjoy worldwide popularity, especially with our corporate clients.

From Creation there is always something new and this year saw the launch of our Perfume of Wine range. Inspired by our exquisitely fragrant Creation Pinot Noir, this construct of seven meticulously sourced essential oils comprises an eau de parfum, three natural hand care products and a room mist.

More highlights during 2021 have been our participation in a number of viticultural projects. These include the GEN-Z Vineyard Project which is focused on connecting growers to new practices, technologies and research findings. We will be starting the experimental phase in 2022. As a pioneer in the field of virus-free vines, Creation has continued to participate in, and contribute to programmes aimed at controlling and eradicating grapevine leafroll disease. We were furthermore selected to take part in a global study on the influence of climate change on the microbial wine terroir of specifically Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The latter is conducted by the Department of Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch.

As co-founders of the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project this initiative remains near and dear to our hearts. I’m delighted to say that 2021 brought great rewards in terms of education, nutrition and sustainable farming. A big thank you to everyone who contributed.

We also wish to thank our agents for their stalwart support and cooperation during 2021. We now also have new agents in Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Nigeria, Reunion, Austria, Canada – and hope to be in Taiwan soon. For Creation online shopping around the world, please click here.

As I sat down to write this blog, the news came through that my name appears on the 2021 WINWSA list of the world’s 50 most influential women in wine and spirits. This final highlight for 2021 I humbly dedicate to my grandmother Eleanor Finlayson, my grandmother-in-law Ida Martin, my mother Jill Finlayson and my mother-in-law Rita Martin.  Behind the scenes each of these talented, hardworking women played a vital part in the wine industry of her region and I just want to thank them for their inspiration and for being my role models.

In conclusion I would like to congratulate our team on all these achievements. Without their support it would not have been possible.

Carolyn
