The CapeWine 2022 theme is centred on ‘Sustainability 360’ which highlights the three core pillars of Place, People and Prosperity. At Creation we applaud this theme for its relevance to our industry and society as a whole.

For the Love of our Land

Situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, we are blessed with one of the most biodiverse wine regions in the world. It is our passion to preserve our natural environment for generations to come through sound practices that not only maintain but also renew.  To this end, we are committed to participating in, and supporting leading scientific initiatives in our industry. These include ClimaVin, a global climate change project spearheaded by Stellenbosch University, and Vititec’s GEN-Z project involving new plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Among our latest projects has also been the installation of an environmentally friendly biome at the entrance of our Tasting Room.  The development of our ‘Walks-in-Progress’ involves the rehabilitation of our natural vegetation while additional environmentally friendly practices in the vineyard include armies of wasps and ladybirds to control pests. Creation is one of only nine wineries in South Africa to have received EnviroWines accreditation and was recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence as WWF Conservation Champion.

An Ode to Nature

At Creation a unique and diverse blend of geology, soils, altitude, aspect and climate facilitates the production of an exciting array of world-class wines. Thus the art of winemaking begins long before the grapes are harvested. It begins with the land itself. From the start, it has been our intention to responsibly engage the potential of our remarkable 450-million-year-old soils and our ideal, cool climatic conditions to create site-specific wines singing the praises of Mother Nature.

In establishing his vineyards, Cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin had the foresight of planting only virus-free clones. This has been a long-term investment in sustainability as virus-free means improved vineyard longevity. It also means improved quality as healthy vineyards yield healthy grapes.


Gently Does It

To minimise the impact of our farming practices on the immense biodiversity of our surroundings, our cellar has been designed to fit like a pearl in an oyster, with the earth insulating one side of the building. Following an approach of minimum interference, JC and his team adhere to a philosophy of ‘enhancing the beauty of Nature’. “When you’re harvesting quality fruit, it is not necessary to manipulate the wine. Rather guide it gently through the process to preserve the sense of place.”

Creation complies with the guidelines laid down by the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme and all our wines boast the sustainability and integrity seal, confirming the estate’s commitment to eco-friendly wine production. Practical measures involve the recycling of packaging, a focus on sustainable packaging and eliminating the use of plastic. We are also proud of the fact that all our cork closures are grown in sustainable forests.

The Taste of Authenticity

As pioneers in the field of wine and food pairing, Creation has gained a proud reputation for our creative and ever-evolving pairing menus. ‘What grows together goes together’ is the motto. This translates into inventive menus comprising only the freshest and finest seasonal ingredients from selected local suppliers. At present more than 80% come from neighbours in the Overberg region, hence going a long way towards reducing our carbon footprint.

Healthy eating options matter to our valued guests and we want the Creation experience to be a feel-good one. Our innovative chefs cater for a wide range of tastes and most dietary requirements.  With the wellbeing of our clients in mind, we are presently running a series of Wine and Wellness workshops, titled L ’Chaim! 

Wings to our Team

A healthy team is a happy and motivated team! Focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of our team members, special emphasis is placed on nutrition, exercise and cognitive behaviour. Holistically, wellness conservation is centred on healing with nature and working with mentors who specialise in their defined areas of expertise.

Upskilling and multiskilling are also high on the agenda. Ranging from personal development programmes to internationally recognised qualifications such as WSET, a variety of training opportunities are on offer. These are aimed at enhancing individual and team skills whilst expanding career horizons and realising inherent potential.

What’s more, our Tasting Room can be seen as a communication hub, with our team listening to and learning from our guests every day. Thus a cycle of innovative and sustainable solutions is created.

Prosperity to the Community

Alongside the value we place on our environment is the awareness of our social responsibility. Thus Creation is a regular contributor to the Cape Wine Auction, raising money to support education in the Cape Winelands.

We are also a founder member of the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde Education Project. Officially launched in January 2017, the project has made great strides in improving the future of farm children living in the area. One of our more recent initiatives with neighbours Haygrove Heaven, has been the establishment of a food garden at Pebbles, where the principles of sustainable crop rotation are taught.

Additional social awareness activities are sponsorships and regular participation in charity fundraising as well as hosting annual Cancer Awareness events. In 2019 I was honoured to be designated a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International for my sense of the needs of our community.

Further contributions to the wellbeing of our community range from supporting small business ventures to encouraging community members with special skills.

In Conclusion

It is a great truth that sustainability requires innovation. To stay at the forefront we at Creation are constantly implementing new means of maintaining and preserving the precious ecological balance on our farm. At the same time we are ever ready to embrace fresh ways of sustaining the wellbeing of our team and our community.
