Creation Sustainability Strategy

Creation is situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, in one of the most biodiverse wine regions in the world. It is our passion to preserve our precious natural environment for generations to come through sound and regenerative practices. This commitment to sustainability is symbiotic, also encompassing the Creation team, our community and our clients. We have divided our efforts into five main focus areas, which in some cases overlap, and are divided into subsections where relevant.

What follows are but a few examples of our comprehensive and ever-expanding strategy.

Our first focus area is the Environment which embraces The Farm, The Vineyards and The Cellar.

At Creation a unique and diverse blend of geology, soils, altitude, aspect and climate facilitates the production of an exciting array of world-class wines. From the outset it has been our intention to responsibly engage the potential of our remarkable terroir to create site-specific wines singing the praises of Mother Nature.

Creation is synonymous with innovation and of great significance is the fact that we were the first to plant virus-free vines in South Africa post 1994. Virus-free is vital for sustainability: planting to grow old! The cuttings from our vineyards are used to propagate clean material for new plantings in South Africa.

We comply with the guidelines laid down by Integrated Production of Wine (IPW). All our wines boast the sustainability and integrity seal, confirming the estate’s commitment to eco-friendly wine production – from vineyard through to cellar and bottling.

Our second focus area is Climate.

We are committed to participating in, and supporting leading scientific initiatives in our industry. Among these are ClimaVin which is a global climate change project, and Vititec GEN-Z, involving experimental plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Focus area number three is Responsible Sourcing.

‘What grows together goes together’ is our motto. This translates into inventive menus comprising only the freshest and finest seasonal ingredients from selected local suppliers. At present more than 80% come from neighbours in the Overberg region, hence going a long way towards reducing our carbon footprint. The chain effect of using local produce has a huge impact on the local economy in a positive and sustainable way.

Another example of responsible sourcing is our closure corks which are grown in sustainable forests.

The fourth and vitally important focus area is People. This covers not only Creation Team Members but also the Extended Creation Community and our valued Clients.

Focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of our team members, special emphasis is placed on nutrition, exercise and cognitive behaviour. Upskilling and multiskilling are also high on our agenda. Ranging from personal development programmes to internationally recognised qualifications such as WSET, a variety of training opportunities are on offer.

One of the challenges facing the South African wine industry is how to enrich the lives of families in our agricultural communities. At Creation, education and food security are priorities.  An example is our involvement in the Hemel-en-Aarde Pebbles Education Project of which we are a founder member. The project currently supports 120 children aged 1 to 13.  The Creation team is also involved in the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde vegetable garden to grow fresh produce for the Pebbles families and other community members.

Providing our guests with wholesome eating options also feeds into the Creation ethos of sustainability. Our innovative chefs cater for a wide range of tastes and most dietary requirements. With the wellbeing of our clients in mind we are presently running a series of Wine and Wellness workshops. 

The last but certainly not least focus area is Creating Awareness of our sustainability initiatives.

To this end we participate in, and support leading sustainability projects, take part in relevant webinars, publish articles and regularly host wellness programmes.

The IPW seal on all our wines communicates our commitment to eco-friendly wine production. Displaying our WWF Champion status, our Carbon Heroes listing and communicating our involvement in Heritage Vineyards are additional ways of creating awareness. And then our respect for our land is also expressed in the abundance of fynbos on display in the beautiful gardens that welcome visitors to the Creation Tasting Room.
