Perfectly Pinot @ Creation

The third annual Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir Celebration is taking place on 29 and 30 January this year and promises to be yet another highlight on the South African wine calendar. Says Carolyn Martin, marketing director of Creation Wines on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge: “We’re excited to participate in this annual event as it provides the Hemel-en-Aarde the ideal opportunity to showcase the quality of Pinot Noir wines produced in this cooler climate region of South Africa.”

Established in 2002 by Carolyn and her winemaker husband Jean-Claude (JC) Martin, the Estate presently offers three different Pinot Noir wines: Creation Pinot Noir, Creation Reserve Pinot Noir and the Creation Art of Pinot Noir. Ranging from intensely fragrant and beautifully earthy to excitingly complex and elegantly spicy, each wine has proved to be a winner in its own right.

The two-day Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Celebration kicks off on Friday 29 January with a tasting at Bona Dea Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley where guests will have the opportunity to meet the winemakers from the area. This will be followed by a gala dinner with Greg Sherwood as the keynote speaker. Greg did his dissertation on Method Cap Classique production and is currently working at Handford Wines in the UK.  He is only the fourth South African ever to pass the prestigious Master of Wine examinations.

Saturday 30 January will see the various Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir producers hosting a series of events. “At Creation we look forward to welcoming our guests at 9h30 for a four course brunch pairing with four different vintages of the Creation Reserve Pinot Noir (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013) as well as the 2013 Creation Art of Pinot Noir – plus three specially selected Burgundian Pinot Noir wines,” says Carolyn.

An impressive list of accolades testifies to the quality of Creation’s Pinots. Among the most recent is a Platter 5 star rating for the 2013 Reserve Pinot Noir. This wine was also selected for the prestigious Top 100 SA Wines list for 2015, while the 2013 Creation Art of Pinot Noir was allocated 94 points by Tim Atkin, British Master of Wine and international wine judge.

Additional Pinot achievements include two gold medals at the 2014 Mondial des Pinots for the 2012 and 2013 Creation Reserve Pinot Noir respectively. What’s more, the 2013 Creation Art of Pinot Noir was allocated a most worthy 92 points by leading US wine critic, Robert Parker.

The Creation Pinot Celebration promises to be a unique event with each course being paired with two specific wines. Says Creation chef, Warwick Taylor: “The outstanding element to take into account with this pairing is the way in which the same cultivar can change over different vintages. The clearest indication of this is the change in the flavour profiling of the dishes we are pairing, ranging from slightly spicy, earthier flavours through to lighter, more fruit orientated dishes. The older Pinots enjoy fresh sage and the younger Pinots pair up nicely with tarragon. In addition we’re also focusing on the role herbs can play when pairing wines.”

Finally looking into the future the 2016 harvest at Creation looks promising. “The 2016 harvest has started earlier than normal and as always we do not want to rate it before the picking is complete, but it does look promising,” says viticulturist and cellarmaster, JC Martin.
