At Creation the harvest is in full swing and with the crushing of our precious grapes the following thoughts come to mind…

The creativity of the winemaker is analogous to the creative processes involved in art making. Both create something new and valuable to experience from materials, tools, ideas and chemistry. Thus the wine cellar can be compared to an artist’s studio - or even an alchemist’s laboratory!

Alchemy in art and winemaking is of course as old as history itself. Ingredients matter. And these include the minerals in paint as well as the minerals the vines derive from the earth. The latter give Creation’s wines the vitality and unique qualities that sets the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge apart.

As with the creation of a unique work of art, the winemaker’s personal input is of the essence. His or her concept, materials, tools, challenges and problem solving all contribute to a unique wine. But, like the existential tree that falls in the forest and no-one hears, Creation’s wines wouldn’t exist without the sensual experience of the wine lover savouring and appreciating the wine. The wine needs to leave the cellar to exist in the wine lover’s world. This is much like art making: if the artwork never left the studio, was never seen or experienced, it would remain invisible and unknown.

Artistic processes involve research into ideas that inspire. These ideas are incubated, distilled and evaluated to ultimately manifest in the intended work of art. Winemaking too, involves research into among others, the terroir, the cultivar and the position of vine growth. Then the artist goes further, displaying his or her work to its fullest advantage. In the same vein, the Creation winemaker goes further, presenting for instance, our wines with cork closures instead of screw tops to ensure a superior experience.

When the Creation tasting room was opened in 2008, an exciting art exhibition expressed the concepts of ‘terroir in wine’ and ‘earth in art’. Since then metal sculptures, earthy paintings and mineral eco-alchemical glass artworks have adorned our tasting room – celebrating Creation’s commitment to the arts. Our cellarmaster JC Martin’s ultimate commitment however, remains the creation of terroir-driven wines of rare balance, elegance, distinction and finesse.

With grateful thanks to the artist Jeannette Unite for her contribution.
