“At Creation every dawn brings an exciting new challenge and innovation is a way of life. This trendsetting spirit has shaped our vision and led to many a thrilling achievement,” says co-owner and marketing director, Carolyn Martin. Situated on the scenic Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge some 9 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, this progressive Walker Bay estate is world-famous for its cool-climate wines and especially for its award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir….

A Winter’s Tale

At the time of writing the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is clad in cloaks of magical mist. Although the vines are slumbering in their deep winter hibernation, work in the vineyards never ceases. Pre-pruning (also known as borselkop pruning) is now the order of the day and according to assistant winemaker Michael Malan this process makes the shoots more manageable during the final pruning, just before spring.  Michael comments: Pruning is…

Virus-Free Future for SA Vines

Vine viruses (especially leafroll) are regarded as one of the wine producer’s biggest enemies as they have the potential to not only reduce the lifespan of a vineyard drastically but also to seriously hamper the quality of the grapes. In their quest to contribute to the establishment of virus-free vineyards in South Africa, VinPro in collaboration with Vititec, Winetech and Creation Wines hosted a workshop at Creation on Monday 8…

Creation. Letting our Terroir Speak

Right from the start it has been our intention to harness the full potential of our land in order to create site-specific wines reflecting our unique terroir. It is indeed this ‘sense of place’ that makes our wines so distinctive. Jean-Claude…

All that remains to be harvested are approximately three tons of grapes for our Cape Vintage and this will be done in a week’s time. In the meantime we’ve asked members of the hardworking Creation team to comment on the 2017 harvest. Cellarmaster JC Martin: Due to a well thought-through pruning schedule and optimum weather…

The High Days of Harvest – 2

No doubt about it: harvest is the highlight on our estate calendar. At the time of writing Creation is buzzing with activity and anticipation as all the care lavished on our vineyards throughout the year finally comes to fruition. The following cultivars have been harvested to date: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier. We’re halfway through the harvest and feeling cautiously optimistic, as it is early days yet….

Creation Viognier – As Vivacious as it is Elegant

Although little known in South Africa, Viognier is a cultivar which is becoming increasingly popular and production has escalated over recent years. Creation was the first in the Hemel-en-Aarde to plant this grape, which is believed to be an ancient variety first brought to Central and Western Europe from Croatia in Roman times. Genetically it is a cousin of Nebbiolo and closely related to the lesser known Piedmont grape, Freisa….
