Sustainability

Creation is situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, in one of the most biodiverse wine regions in the world. It is our passion to preserve our precious natural environment for generations to come through sound practices that not only maintain but also renew. This commitment to sustainability is symbiotic, also encompassing the Creation team, our community and our clients. To this end, we have compiled a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy.

The Farm

To acknowledge the role Mother Nature plays in our success, Creation complies with the sustainability guidelines laid down by the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme. We have furthermore pledged our support to the Landmark Foundation and are officially predator friendly. Working hand in hand with Nature, Creation is one of only nine wineries in South Africa to have received EnviroWines accreditation. Our official WWF Conservation Champion status dates back to May 2022.

The Vineyards

Creation is synonymous with innovation and of great significance is the fact that we were the first to plant virus-free vines in South Africa post-1994. Virus-free is vital for sustainability: planting to grow old! The cuttings from our vineyards are used to propagate clean material for new plantings in South Africa. Among the measures to preserve soil biodiversity is the planting of winter cover crops. Additional sustainability practices include the composting of organic waste to be used as mulch in the vineyards, as well as armies of ladybirds and owls to control pests.

The Cellar

Creation complies with the guidelines laid down by Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) and all our wines boast the sustainability and integrity seal, confirming the estate’s commitment to eco-friendly wine production. The seal is supported by a sophisticated tracking system by means of which every stage in the wine-production chain can be tracked – from vineyard through to cellar and bottling. Accreditation is only granted to those wineries that comply with the sustainability guidelines laid down by the IPW scheme.

The Climate

We are committed to participating in, and supporting leading scientific initiatives in our industry. These include: ClimaVin, a global climate change project spearheaded by Stellenbosch University; and the Vititec GEN-Z project, involving experimental plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, to establish the clones and rootstocks best suited to mitigate climate change.

Sourcing

‘What grows together goes together’ is our motto. This translates into inventive menus comprising only the freshest and finest seasonal ingredients from selected local suppliers. At present more than 80% come from neighbours in the Overberg region, hence going a long way towards reducing our carbon footprint. The chain effect of using local produce has a huge impact on the local economy in a positive and sustainable way.

The Team Members

A healthy team is a happy and motivated team. Focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of our team members, special emphasis is placed on nutrition, exercise and cognitive behaviour. Holistically, wellness conservation is centred on healing with nature and working with mentors who specialise in their defined areas of expertise.

Upskilling and multiskilling are high on our agenda. Ranging from personal development programmes to internationally recognised qualifications such as WSET, a variety of training opportunities are on offer. These are aimed at enhancing individual and team skills, expanding career horizons, realising inherent potential and creating a sustainable team.

Extended Creation Community

One of the challenges of the South African wine industry is how to enrich the lives of families in our agricultural communities. At Creation, education and food security are priorities. Creation’s involvement in the Hemel-en-Aarde Pebbles Education Project of which we are a founder member, dates back to 2017. The Creation team is involved in the Pebbles Hemel-en-Aarde vegetable garden to provide fresh produce to the Pebbles families and other community members. We also support the Franklin Ohana Sustainability Garden in the nearby town of Hawston.

Creation Clients

Healthy eating options matter to our valued guests and we want the Creation experience to be a feel-good one. Our chefs cater for a wide range of tastes and most dietary requirements. All our wines are vegan. With the wellbeing of our clients in mind, we are presently running a series of Wine and Wellness workshops.
