Letting Nature Speak: Rousseau at Creation
Creation Wines co-founder and cellarmaster Jean-Claude (JC) Martin grew up overlooking St Peter’s Island on Lake Biel in Switzerland, the very landscape where 18th-century philosopher Jean‑Jacques Rousseau spent some of his most contemplative weeks, finding inspiration for the work that still shapes how the world thinks about nature and freedom today.
From an early age, JC absorbed this atmosphere of quiet reflection and respect for the natural world, and Rousseau’s belief that true happiness lies in simplicity and harmony with nature has accompanied him ever since. When we were later married in the monastery where Rousseau once stayed, that connection became part of our shared story, binding our lives and our marriage to a place and a philosophy that honour authenticity, contemplation and care.
Creation on the Hemel‑en‑Aarde Ridge is, in many ways, the unfolding of that legacy: a farm where JC’s Swiss roots and Rousseau’s vision of nature’s goodness meet the Cape’s fynbos, ocean breezes and ancient soils in the glass. Here, the commitment is to let the land speak with clarity and integrity, crafting wines that echo Rousseau’s insight that the finest pleasures are those that remain closest to nature and truest to their origin.
In this spirit, the truest luxury at Creation begins in nature, not in artifice, and each vintage is an invitation to taste the difference this makes. Inspired by Rousseau, JC seeks not to impose his will on the land but to reveal its authentic voice, allowing the unique Hemel‑en‑Aarde terroir to shape wines of precision, texture and place. In the cellar and at the table, craftsmanship serves this authenticity: every decision, from vine to glass, aims at harmony rather than excess, inviting guests to savour honest pleasure over spectacle.
Honouring a broader civic virtue, Creation is committed to stewardship of the environment and the local community, cultivating a shared ‘common good’ where team, neighbours and visitors co‑create experiences that celebrate freedom, beauty and responsibility in every sip. Our biodiversity, sustainability initiatives and close relationships with local producers are all expressions of this same conviction that true value arises when nature and people thrive together.
Recently, literary scholar Ian Glenn had lunch with JC at Creation, where Lake Biel memories, Rousseau’s reflections and Hemel en Aarde’s living landscape met around the table. It inspired Ian to write a story tracing how conversation, cuisine and cool climate wines wove together ideas of nature, freedom and authenticity that have travelled from St Peter’s Island in Switzerland to the vineyards of Creation today.
