Winter Solstice in the Creation Vineyards
After a very challenging harvest time, with almost 200 mm of rain from the first to the last day of harvest, we can still look back and be grateful for very good quality grapes, especially on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With the autumn rainfall above average, and June as the first month of winter so far very wet and cold, the vines can go into proper winter hibernation. We need the cold to ensure even budding in spring, which in turn ensures good quantity as well as quality. We are grateful that we missed the widespread flooding, with minimal erosion damage in the vineyards and on the roads.
Our vines may be slumbering in their well-deserved hibernation, but work in the vineyards never ceases. Winter is the time of year for pruning, planting of poles in new vineyard blocks, general maintenance and planning for the new grape season.
We like to refer to our current ‘Community of Taste’ menu as a celebration of fine wine, fine cuisine and fine people. Over the next few months, we will be featuring a series of blogs to introduce some of the fine people on our team. Please click here to read about Vuyiseka Ngcongolo.
