Creation is situated in one of the most biodiverse wine regions in the world, in a beautiful arena of undulating hills surrounded by fynbos-clad mountains and rivers. When we planted our first virus-free vines in 2003, we took a significant lead in environmental custodianship. We kept swathes of fynbos between our vineyards and set about preserving the soil microbiome, using organic crops for mulch.
A healthy ecosystem requires proactive management. We constantly clear alien vegetation to make way for indigenous fynbos, and through our support of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), we are officially predator friendly. In fact, Creation is accredited and certified by the WWF as a Conservation Champion. We constantly track our carbon emissions and audit ourselves by participating in the Climate, Fruit and Wine Carbon Calculator. Today nearly 80% of the energy we produce and use is green.
While much of what we do takes place behind the scenes, our guests are immediately exposed to our commitment to a sustainable environment. Our WWF credentials are proudly displayed in our parking areas. Our guests arrive via a fragrant fynbos walk and are welcomed into our Tasting Room via a beautiful and environmentally positive biome, set against a terroir wall built from stones that are between 255 million and 550 million years old stones, collected from our vineyards. The wall is not only aesthetically appealing, but also in line with our focus on making our buildings, especially the Tasting Room, healthier at a microbial level.
Our motto, ‘what grows together, goes together’, means that everyone, from guests to team members, eat the finest and freshest local ingredients, 80% of which come directly from our neighbours in the Overberg. This underpins our commitment to a lower carbon footprint while boosting the local economy and creating a happier, healthier team.
At Creation, wine and food pairing has become an imaginative, interactive and thought-provoking experience. Topics of discussion include sustainability, freshness, health and community support. Education and food security are especially close to our hearts, and our valued guests are offered the opportunity to contribute to these worthy causes. No one leaves our tables without some sense of the journey we have undertaken and the part they have played in it. In this way, we proudly share the sense of place that is Creation.
