My name is Jonathan Das and I’m the son of a South Africa mother and a Canadian father. Having just finished my first year at Fanshawe Culinary School in Canada I wanted to spend a few months in South Africa, learning more about different kinds of food, ingredients and developing my skills.
My grandparents live in Hermanus and on my second day in South Africa I had lunch at Creation. I was excited to get a positive response when I asked if I could volunteer in the kitchen. I started a week later, rather nervous about working in a new kitchen in a country I hadn’t worked before. Like the beginning of most jobs, I wasn’t sure what to do or what was expected of me and an added and interesting challenge was trying to understand Afrikaans – a language I don’t speak.
Despite my nervousness, I was welcomed by the kitchen staff, who were happy to help me. It didn’t take long to find my bearings and I really learnt a lot. The team at Creation is very talented and enjoyable to work with. The food is fantastic, and this is one of the cleanest and most organized kitchens I have worked in!
I am thankful for the experience and have enjoyed my week growing under the guidance of all those who work at Creation. Thank you, Team Creation.
